Spotlightin theThis Week’s BUSINESS
A restaurant is not always a restaurant; sometimes it’s a gateway to adventure. That’s
what you will find when you dine at the Landing Strip Restaurant at the Okeechobee Airport on Hwy. 98.
When Harold DeLange and Robert Lambert bought the site four years ago they set to work to make it a place to truly enjoy a dining experi-ence. The dining areas, both inside and on an outdoor covered patio are right on the airport runways. It is a particularly fascinating place to bring the kids so they can not only watch take-offs and landings, but see “real” pilots in uniform as they bring visitors from as far away as Europe or as near as Vero Beach.
All this while enjoying the home cooked fare for breakfast or lunch. Breakfast is served all day by experi-enced personnel who have been with the place since it opened in 2007.
Reading the menu is no problem be-cause with lots of windows and an all-glass wall, lighting is never a prob-lem. Everywhere you sit, you have a view of the runways.
Harold said that many of the ‘regu-lars’ are so well known that the staff has their meal already ordered by the time they open the door. Many come to sit by the fireplace and enjoy a glass of wine.
Lunch begins at 11 a.m. with differ-ent ‘specials’ every day. Many of the
businesses and farms on Hwy 98 rely on The Landing Strip which is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week.
Adjacent to the restaurant is a facility which works on and re-conditions jet airplanes. Many a customer has had a chance to see a recently-completed plane rolled out right in front of them as they are eating lunch.
For your unique dining experience, head to the airport and bon appétit.
Standing in front of the comfortable fireplace are servers Tino Fonseca and Belinda Shellen flanking cook Jefferey Carter.

Lake OkeechobeeFishing Report
CAPTAIN MIKE SHELLENwww.OkeechobeeBassFishing.com
863-357-0892
Brought to you by
As usual we tried to be on the water at first light each day throughout the week. We had var-ied results with our top water bite, some days
catching as many as 20 to 25 bass, while other days we only caught 10 to 15 fish before they quit on us. Our primary baits were a pop’r, tiny torpedo or spook jr. as well as a myriad of old baits in my box that had not been used in a while. The fish did not seem to care what bait we were using some days, then the next day they would only eat one particular bait, go figure!
Each day when the sun got well into the sky we were forced to go to either lipless crank baits or plastics to continue catching fish. A chrome w/black back rattle trap is good as a search bait for active fish and if you locate school fish it can load the boat for you. Senko’s, flukes, skinny dippers, trick worms and 10 inch worms all are drawing strikes. The bass will sometimes dis-play a preference for one bait over another, so it is nec-essary to try different baits until you find the one the bass cannot leave alone.
The shad on the lake are hatching in great numbers, we are seeing pods of shad around the grass lines as well as way out in the lake. We got into a school of bass
chasing and gorging themselves on shad last week and caught 30 plus bass in an hour. The bass were spewing shad all over the boat when we caught them they were so full. Numerous baits will work in this situation. Staying off of the bass and not spooking them is more critical than what bait you are throwing in this case.
