Archdiocese of San Antonio Latest updates on coronavirus-related cancellations, postponements in the Archdiocese of San Antonio
The response to the COVID-19 outbreak is a fast-paced story around the globe, nation, state, and in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Following is a list of the soonest cancellations. Updates, and additional information will be provided later.
Youth Spectacular, Saturday, March 21, on the campus of St. Mary’s University. Catholic Night at the Spurs with Archbishop Gustavo, scheduled for Wednesday, April 15,
CTSA Leadership Luncheon The Catholic Television of San Antonio Leadership Luncheon, originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, will be held at a new date, on Tuesday, July 14, at the St. Paul Community Center at 1202 Donaldson Avenue.
Precautionary guidelines for parishes
On March 3, the archdiocese recommended precautions to parishes in regards to the celebration of the liturgy, and those guidelines are still in effect until further notice.
Parishes are requested to temporarily distribute Holy Communion in the hand rather than on the tongue; temporarily discontinue the distribution of the Precious Blood at Mass; remove holy water from fonts at the church doors; and to avoid physical contact would be advisable. Other dioceses in the state and nationally have adopted these temporary measures. Pastors have discretion in instituting these directives in their parishes, in light of local needs and protocols. The pastors also have oversight regarding arrangements for all meetings and events that take place in their parishes.
Obviously, those who are feeling ill or who have underlying health issues should remain home and not come to church. There is, of course, no obligation for the sick to be a Mass. To stay home from Sunday Mass in these circumstances is not a mortal sin. In fact, love for neighbor should prompt individuals not to attend Mass if they are contagious and exhibiting symptoms. We also strongly encourage all to follow the simple recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, going to the bathroom, and before eating or preparing food.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
The COVID-19 outbreak has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, and more serious measures are being taken in other parts of the country and in Texas to combat the spread of the virus. We ask for prayers for all those affected by this virus around the globe, and that the threat of COVID-19 be removed across the world, in our country, state, and locally.
The archdiocese continues to listen to health and civil authorities regarding public safety. We are not likely to control the virus, but rather control the spread of the virus. For information on COVID-19, see https://www.sanantonio.gov/Health/News/Alerts/CoronaVirus

During the COVID-19 pandemic, life has changed for all of us. We are all experiencing the effects of restrictions, shortages, and the danger of becoming infected with the virus. As you are away, the Archbishop has temporarily cancelled weekend masses at all parishes. While we understand that this action is for our protection and for the common good, it also puts a tremendous strain on our budget. With no weekend masses comes no weekend offertory, which means we are left needing your help.
There are a couple of things we can do. One is that your weekly offering can be made online. If you need help, contact the Notre Dame office. Secondly, we will put offering baskets out at the daily masses, and you can put your offering in there. Lastly, you can always personally visit the office to drop off your offering, or you can put it in the mail slot in the door to the office that faces Kemper Hall.
In these trying times we are all doing the best we can to comply with the requests of both Church and civil authorities to do whatever we can to stop or at least slow the spread of the virus. I appreciate your help in maintaining Notre Dame parish until this pandemic passes.
God Bless you! Fr. David
Society of St Vincent de Paul UPDATE
St Vinny’s on Broadway Thrift Store will be closed until April 4, 2020. We are planning to reopen that day. The Food Pantry and Financial Aid Office will remain OPEN.
Therefore, we still need 40 cans that wonderfully appear in the Narthex. The store is our biggest source of revenue. We missed the second collection in March. Checks can be mailed to us, we have a locked mailbox. If you have ever thought of donating to St Vincent someday, this is the DAY.
Society of St Vincent de Paul 1145 Broadway
The Knights of Columbus, Fr. Henry Kemper Council 6409 invites you to please consider participating in the “40 Cans for Lent” program as a part of your Lenten journey.
Simply donate one can of food or a non-perishable item for each of the 40 days of Lent. Donations may be dropped off in the Church narthex St. Vincent de Paul cart through Easter Sunday. This program benefits those in our community served by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
Lent provides an opportunity for each of us to give generously – to show gratitude for God’s gift to us and to share those gifts with others.
“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him.”
Padre David

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower. The Passion and Resurrection Narratives of Jesus: A
Commentary by Father Stephen J. Binz states “this work is a commentary on the heart of the Gospels - the passion and resurrection of Jesus. It explains each scene of the narratives from all four Gospels and gives reasons for the differences in the four accounts … and will enrich the reader’s understanding of the heart of the Christian faith.” The passion and resurrection narratives with The Gospel of Mark are the earliest surviving narratives and they are important because they are the principle sources for The Gospel of Matthew and Luke and possibly even for John. The primary source of Matthew’s passion account is the Gospel of Mark. Matthew follows Mark’s basic sequence and includes every episode from his account. Even though they are very similar, there are very important differences which Matthew does for a purpose. The identity of Jesus is not hidden as in Mark, so the dramatic quality of the unfolding of Jesus’ identity is lessened. The drama of Matthew lies in Jesus’ rejection by those he came to save. Luke’s account of the passion relies on Mark as its principle source, yet it differs in significant ways. Many incidences in Mark’s Gospels have been omitted in Luke and new material added that is not found in Mark. Many of the details that come from Mark are very similar to those found in John’s Gospels. Also, Luke’s sequence of events differs from that of Mark. Luke uses his resources creatively to highlight his own unique themes. Luke is also author of the Acts of the Apostles. Acts is the completion of Luke’s gospel while the Church in Acts influences the shape of Luke’s Gospel. The Gospel of John is drastically different from the other three gospels. It grew out of a different community which reflected on the events of Jesus’ life in a unique way. In his gospel, events received from tradition are given a fuller meaning as they become symbols that reveal more fully the mystery of Christ. John’s gospel is a revelation of the glory of God’s only Son. This book was reviewed by Deborah Harris, a Notre Dame parishioner.
Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Anita Delgadillo & Mary Lorenzo. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

RCIA REFLECTIONS: (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
This weekend and the next two weekends the RCIA will celebrate the Scrutinies. These are celebrated
specifically with the Elect (unbaptized) but should be a time we each reflect on our sinful actions and
our blessings of strength from God. Scrutinies are meant to uncover what is weak, defective, and sinful
or what separates us from Christ in our lives. They also are meant to strengthen what is upright, strong
and holy in each of us.
Please pray for these Elect as they scrutinize their lives and seek ways to come ever closer to their Lord
and God.
