• Nonpolar (hydrophobic)– Aliphatic (non-aromatic, mostly straight chains)– Aromatic (conjugated ring structures)

• Polar (hydrophilic)– Uncharged

• Hydrogen bonds

– Positively charged• “basic”

– Negatively charged• “acidic”
