NordTyreTyre labelling and Nordic traffic noise

Background

• Traffic noise is a topic important to all Nordic countries, as we all are concerned with the steadily increasing traffic noise

• Labelling of new vehicle tyres will be mandatory in all EU and EEC countries from November 2012. The label contains values of three parameters: wet grip, rolling resistance and noise.

• There is a need to know how “low noise” tyres can contribute to noise abatement and to clarify how this contribution can be optimized

NordTyreTyre labelling and Nordic traffic noise

Goals

• Clarify which combinations of tyres and pavements will yield the lowest noise emission, influencing the environment along roads and highways.

This knowledge will be the basis for qualified decision making concerning actions to mitigate traffic noise in the Nordic countries.

• Clarify the noise emission from tyres, including Nordic winter tyres and its possible correlation with wet grip, snow grip and ice grip.

These results can be used to define realistic new tyre noise level limits that could be used in a future revision of the EU tyre labelling, Reg (EC) No1222/2009, and the tyre noise limits in Reg (EC) No 661/2009, including snow grip and ice grip in addition to wet grip.

NordTyre - 4 defined parts

We have defined the following parts of the project:

• Part 1: State-of-the-art + new tyres on representative pavements

• Part 2: Relation between noise, wet grip, snow grip and ice grip

– Important since wet grip and snow grip seems to be contradictory qualities

– Regulatory Committee on tyres welcomes input on this issue

• Part 3: Truck tyres

– How much do they contribute to traffic noise?

– Lenient limits in the EC regulation

• Part 4: Combined effects of tyre aging and pavement ageing
