Introduction to NFCNFC is one of the latest wireless communication

technologies. As a short-range wireless connectivity technology.

NFC offers safe — yet simple and intuitive — communication between electronic devices.

Enables the exchange of data between devices over a distance of up to 20 centimetres.

NFC-enabled devices only need to be ‘tapped together' for them to connect via NFC

How NFC WorksNFC is based on RFID technology that uses

magnetic field induction to enable communication between electronic devices in close proximity.

NFC operates at 13.56 MHz

For two devices to communicate using NFC, one device must have an NFC reader/writer and one must have an NFC tag. The tag is essentially an integrated circuit containing data, connected to an antenna, that can read and written by the reader.

BASIC FUNCTIONALITY OF 13.56 MHZ RFID

SYSTEMS

APPLICATIONS NFC application categories: Touch and Go: Applications such as access

control or transport/event ticketing, where the user needs only to bring the device storing the ticket or access code close to the reader.

Also, for simple data, capture applications, such as picking up an Internet URL from a smart label on a poster. .

Touch and Confirm Applications such as mobile payment where the user has to confirm the interaction by entering a password or just accepting the transaction

Touch and Connect:Touch and Connect: Linking two NFC-enabled devices to enable peer to peer transfer of data such as downloading music, exchanging images or synchronizing address books

NFC and Mobile Payment

Adding NFC to Terminals Adds Value to Mobile Payments

What is the Future?Nokia is active in the area of NFC since

2004

Together with Philips and Sony, founded the NFC Forum.

Currently, global membership in the NFC Forum had exceeded 140 organizations.

The NFC Ecosystem is Broad

TECHNICAL BASIS AND FEATURES

- It is intuitive (“touch and start”) - It is suitable for payment/financial applications- It interacts also with battery-less smart devices- It is low cost- Standardized in ISO/IEC 18092 NFCIP-1 (NFC Interface and Protocol - 1)- Based on RF-ID technology at 13.56 MHz- Operating distance typical 20 cm- Data rate today up to 424 kbps (up to 1 Mbps planned)

AdvantagesLow cost, NFC has very fast and easy configuration and pairing,Instant connection capability. “Out of the box” -No special software - No manual configuration and settings. - No search and pair procedure - User initiates the process - Simple data acquisition just by touching - Read data from any electrical device (interface dependent) - Read data from passive RFID tag

CONCLUSION

In the near future NFC will be the frontrunner technology for data capture, data transfer and access control applications.

NFC technology continues to evolve and develop new applications. It is going to bring revolution in mobile communications.
