National & Priority District
Note on the data
• Please note that in what follows, the graphs on 117 call volumes have been produced using data provided by 117. The NERC wishes to thank the 117 team for sharing this.
• The % increases shown on the graphs in this pack may differ from those show in data packs produced by 117. This is because 117 are tracking percentage increases in call volume week on week, whereas this pack compares this week’s call volumes to the average of the previous 3 week’s volumes. The data used is identical.
3 objectives of analysis
What did we do?What did we do? What were the results? What were the results?
Social mobilization efforts• Radio and Television appearances• SLAJ campaigns
House to house campaigns• Community task force to engage
homes• Health workers to identify sick• One bar of soap for each home
Active case finding• Searching in high transmission
districts for new cases
Has social mobilization led to people engaging more with the response?• 117 Calls• Passive alerts• EVD deaths• Walk - insDid we find more sick people and screen them for EVD?• Active alerts• People meeting case definition• Suspect cases testedDid we find more EVD cases?• Number of cases• Source of cases

Did the campaign lead to people engaging more with the response?
Did the campaign lead to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
The number of calls and alerts during the 3-day campaign increased drastically compared to previous 3 weeks indicating better community engagement
National
Did the campaign lead to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
Only 2 cases came from deaths in the community. This is not a reduction in % compared to previous weeks, but is a small number.

2 Finding sick people
The number of alerts raised by response staff increased nationally over the campaign which indicates Ebola response teams were able to identify additional sick people

2 Finding sick people
The number of suspect cases being tested increased slightly compared with previous weeks.

Note: # of suspect cases tested serve as a proxy for the number of people found that meet the case definition. However, these numbers will differ so it should only be used to assess trend over time. Some lab tests may also be for repeat tests for those already found before the campaign

Summary of active case finding3 Active case finding
Overall, 10 cases were discovered during the campaign

Western Area
Has the campaign led to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
There was a considerable increase in calls to 117 from members of the public and in the number of alerts from the public recorded by the DERC
Back Back
Western Area
Has the campaign led to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
There was a very large drop in walk ins that met the case definition. This is likely to be due to being forced to stay at home, but it is reassuring that ambulance activity also went up over
the 3 days, meaning that people didn’t stay sick in their homes.
Western Area
Did we find more sick people and screen them for EVD
2 Finding sick people
The number of calls to 117 from response staff doubled compared with previous weeks. The Western Area were very successful in finding a large number of people that met the case definition, again more than doubling previous weeks. This suggests that case finding activities
were well executed.
Western Area
Bombali
Has the campaign led to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
There was a large increase in calls to 117 from members of the public, and very large increase in alerts from the public recorded by the command centre which suggests that social
mobilisation has encouraged people to call 117 for the right kinds of cases (those that appear to have EVD symptoms)

2 Finding sick people
Response staff, however, were less active in calling alerts through to 117, as shown by the fairly small increase in call volumes from response team members.

2 Finding sick people
Given high activity from members of the public, there was an increase in the numbers of suspect cases who were tested as a result of the campaign.

Port Loko
Has the campaign led to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
There was some increase in 117 calls from the public, but not as large as in other districts.Few of the calls resulted in alerts that were worthy of a DSO follow up, implying that most of
the calls were about people without EVD symptoms

Kambia
Did the campaign lead to people engaging more with the response?
1 Social mobilization
There was a sizeable increase in calls to the public
Back
Overall, walk-ins dropped as a result of campaign by 40% compared with the
previous 3 weeks.
Kambia
Did we find more sick people and bring them into the system
2 Suspect screening
The number of alerts from response staff increased considerably which indicates Ebola response teams were able to identify additional sick people, but relatively few of those met
the case definition in Kambia.

Kambia
Summary of impacts in each district• Western: very strong impacts on both community reporting of
cases and on response staff activity which resulted in bringing a large number of people meeting the case definition into the system. This indicates strong surveillance performance.
• Kambia: Good at galvanising the community, lots of alerts raised for sick people by response staff, but found relatively few people that had EVD symptoms.
• Port Loko: some signs of increased engagement by public, and lots of activity by response staff, but it didn’t lead to finding more people with EVD-like symptoms.
• Bombali: Social mobilisation encouraged community to call in alerts and to do so for the right kinds of cases, but response staff were not very active and there wasn’t a big increase in the number of people found with EVD-like symptoms compared with previous weeks. This suggests that surveillance and active case finding could have been stronger during the campaign.
