On 9 December, Garden Club members at-tended our Christmas lunch at Naja Caf andGarden Centre in Mangawhai and enjoyed a deli-cious choice of dishes.
Naja Garden Vouchers were raffled and won byBernice Flower and Carol Hunter. To finish theday members admired the Naja garden nursery.
Our first meeting for the 2010 year is at Naira
Vaneys home on 17 February at 11.00 a.m. for apicnic and games and also featuring a decorativetheme competition of Nosegays and posies.Bring your lunch.
The main concern this month will be moisture
plenty of water will be needed for your gar-
den.
All those vegetables will be producing so
watch out for summer insects. Thrips are a
particular menace.
Lightly prune roses and dead head to encour-age more flowers. Also disbud chrysanthe-
mums. February is the main month to plant
bulbs.
Fruit harvest begins this month. Keep the
trees well watered to swell the fruit size.
Grape vines need to be trimmed before final
harvest and covering with a net to prevent thebirds from eating all those grapes.

CLASSIC POWER BOAT CLUBMEETING
To All Boaties: Remember when boat racing was
relatively simple. Get out on the water, race at
speeds of 50-60mph and sometimes more if you
were lucky to have a hydroplane. Costs were
minimal and it was a fun family orientated week-
end with tall tales of how close the racing was
and if the track was a little longer I could have
passed you. Not many helmets, life jackets and
OSH in those days.
Just some of the clubs that were around 40
years ago in Northland, included Kaitaia, Bay of
Islands, Otamatea, Whangarei and Horeke. Any-
one out there remember these, we would love to
hear from you .
A few like minded people are looking to start a
Classic Powerboat Club in the Northland area
with plans to expand further afield. There is in-
terest from as far away as South Island but we
plan to organise our own backyard first with a
few fun days over the year with a chance to get
your boats out on the water for a spurt.
Anyone interested in more information and get-
ting into the race game at ground level we are
having a meeting to discuss our options and
making this idea a reality. Time to stop the talk-
ing and get doing. All information and ideas wel-
come.

A lot of the staff take holidays later inthe year and work through the Christmas breakbecause Christmas is a lot of fun at the RestHome. The visitor numbers go up by a hugeamount during the holiday break and the resi-dents get special pleasure not only from visits byrelatives from all corners of the world but visitsfrom the people of Maungaturoto who come in towish us well even though they do not know any-one at the Rest Home. The Friends of the Rest Home gave the kitchen alovely knife set which our cooks are very thankfulfor, they also gave every resident a present so Iwould like to thank Friends of the Rest Homewho work along behind the scenes all yearround.
Another thing we were grateful for this Christmaswas the many gifts that came in for staff and resi-dents; these included ham and Christmas cakesas well as chocolates, wine and other treats.
So from the staff and residents thank you all foryour gifts, visits and kind thoughts. We hope2010 treats you well.
