The inspiration
The Modest Bahay Kubo
Also known as a Nipa Hut, this architecture can still be found along the countryside. It is constructed of indigenous materials that can easily be found in their local surroundings – wood, planks, grass, bamboo and large logs. Raising the interior from the ground safeguards the shelter's inhabitants from flood, and from snakes and other wild animals.
Normally cubic in shape, this shelter is raised on stilts or posts of one to two meters depending on the area where the said shelter is constructed – it may be on solid ground, on a hillside or mountainside, or in shallow water.
A typical bahay kubo only has one, large, open, multi-purpose room for dwelling, called bulwagan. It has a cellar, called silong where most household chores are done. This area serves as the area for livestock pens, storage space, workspace and granary. The walls are made of nipa and cogon leaves or sawali or woven bamboo, and there are large windows on all sides, which keep the interior well-ventilated.
The windows have tukod or “legs” that hold the swinging shades open during the day, and secure it back in place at night. Another feature of the the bahay kubo is ladder or hagdan which can easily be removed at night or when the owners are out. Likewise, some huts have an open back porch or batalan where household chores are done and where the jars of water are placed.
About the Development
LUNA ENCANTA (Moon Enchants) is what we named our quixotic village complex on the hill in Barangay Bagong Silang in Calatagan, Batangas. It has a
panoramic view of Balayan Bay, Cape Santiago, Mindoro and other surrounding islands. Our peninsula is known for its sun and sea, fresh air and scenery. Romanticism radiates all over the peninsula and this is what makes our niche a popular haunt among couples looking for retreat. We now have
an ever growing multinational community in the area that value's what Calatagan has to offer. Luna Encanta will make you experience what living was
like in a traditional Filipino setting in an era that has long vanished and can only be recreated in a controlled community like this one. We are now in the land development phase and ground breaking on our units starts at the end
of June and our model home's will be ready by the end of the year.
Casita de Luna Encanta
We have turned to the native Bahay Kubo as our inspiration for designing a vacation home. It may be the most basic in Filipino
architecture, but it is also the most practical in design for living in the tropics. The lower floor is where we situate the kitchen and
entertainment space and the second floor we put the living quarters.
Vast windows control ventilation providing adequate protection
from the sun and rain as well as allowing nature indoors. Filipinos are renowned for their hospitality, so in keeping with this tradition
we designed our casita as a ready entertainment center. Times have changed but the climate has not so simplicity in design, ventilation
and comfort all come together with the evolution of our design. The bahay kubo was a structure perfect for it's time and who's time
has again come.
