My Way of Life

1901-1914

By Clement Kim

ContentsA male farm worker living in the period of 1901-1914• Family• Work• Money• Religion• Hygiene• Transport• Entertainment• Supplies

The mornings sun wakes me to a new day of intense work. I brush my teeth and eat a simple breakfast of toast and egg.

Family

I live in a stable community with my wife and have no children yet. My relationship with my wife is strong and I have no intention of separation.

Work

I start my work early in the morning at around 6am and I work on the farm. My wife also helps me and I am very grateful to have such a lovely hard working lady.

Money

My income made was or a standard. I didn’t make a lot of profit but there is enough money to sustain a healthy and happy life. My money runs around how much rain fall I receive and if the climate is right.

Religion

I pray every night before dinner that everything will go well and I go to church every Sunday with my community.

Supplies

I usually have enough resources of food from the farm but things like housing equipment I would buy from the local shops.

HygieneThe toilet was situated

outside away from the main building and it is a portable room that can be lifted and repositioned somewhere else. The toilet was a dug out hole and when it was filled, I would move the box somewhere else and cover the hole.

Transport

I would usually walk to wherever I was going but if I were travelling long distances, I would take a carriage pulled by horses or take my own horse and ride it to the destination.

Entertainment

Ever afternoon I would sit down listening to the radio and My wife knew how to play the piano.
