The more I paint, the more I realizethat my work has a lot to do with intimacy

and man’s reflective relationship with nature.

ForewordAfter almost 40 years in the art business, Franklin Bowles Galleries is embracing the 21stCentury by premiering our first online catalog! I think you will truly enjoy “clicking”through the pages to see the exceptional collection of new work that my longtime friend,Larry Horowitz, has created for us.

Earlier this month, the Horowitz family and another im-portant artistic family, that of Claude and Margot Lazar, were joined in marriage. Alissa Horowitz and VictorLazaro were married on Cape Cod in the historic townof Wellfleet. The Horowitz family has long had a summerhome there and Larry has used the surrounding environsas inspiration for many of his memorable paintings overthe years. Recently, Deborah Forman, a journalist and arthistorian, included Larry’s work in a beautiful book ofCape Cod artists titled, Images of Land and Sea. Forover a century, artists have been drawn to this region, at-tracted by the spectacular land and seascapes.

As an artist, Larry has always beenopen to new ideas; he’s exceptional inhis willingness to stretch beyond hiscomfort zone and constantly explorenew artistic techniques. In this exhibi-tion, Larry has given us an enticing newmedium, which I particularly love -- a se-ries of hand-made books of watercolorsdepicting the California coast. Theywere created while he was on one of hisinfamous road trips, traveling southdown Route1 from San Francisco to SanDiego. The presentation is charming, and the watercolors themselves are

loosely painted and form alovely travel diary. Artist’sbooks have been made sincethe early 1800s and are cov-eted by discretionary collec-tors; the Palace of the Legion ofHonor in San Francisco wasthe recent recipient of theDavid and Reva Logan collection of 300 modern art books. In addition, Larry has tried aninteresting new format which we have used on our invitation. Larry tells me that these oval

compositions are designed to lead the viewer’s eye in a circularmotion around the canvas rather than fix on a single point.

Larry Horowitz has always shunned the industrial infavor of bucolic or agrarian subjects. He hasnoted: “The more I paint, the more I realize thatmy work has a lot to do with intimacy and man’sreflective relationship with nature.” He often de-fines that relationship through the use of lightwhich he manipulates to create tone and mood. InSecret Beach, his subject is a beach and trees, but

the focus and feel are of the full daylight, diffusedthrough the humid atmosphere of the coast. One not

only sees the beach, one feels it.

This is true of all his work. Horowitz allows us to experience with him our relationship tonature. His motto could be, “have paintbrush, will travel,” and I, for one, am grateful to bealong for the ride!
