The Competition
Formula SAE® is a student design competition organized by SAE International; sponsored by Ford, GM, Honda; with volunteers from Bosch, Chrysler, Roush, SCCA, Toyota, and other tier 1 & 2 suppliers.
The first competition was started back in 1981 and now includes annual events in Michigan, Nebraska, Australia, Brazil, Italy, Germany, and the U.K.

The ConceptThe Formula SAE competition is for SAE student members
to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars.
The restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited so that the knowledge, creativity, and imagination of the students are challenged.

The Venue This year’s Michigan event will host 120 teams representing 12
countries.
The competition will take place Wed May 9th through Sat May 12th at the

2 circles of 50’ diameter in a figure-8 pattern 2 drivers per car / 2 runs per driver Each run consists of 2-right and 2-left laps

Course Length = approx ½ mile 2 drivers per car / 2 laps per driver Typically 3-4 cars on the track concurrently No passing in this “solo” event Avg Speeds = 35 to 40 MPH

Endurance & Fuel Economy EventAll day Saturday
Course Length ~ 1.0 Kilometer Total run = 2 x 11 laps 2 drivers per car / Driver change midway Typically 5-7 cars on the track concurrently Passing within designated passing zones Avg speed = 35 MPH / Approx top speed = 65 MPH

New This Year …FSAE Electric Vehicle Demo Runs
New U.S. competition to be introduced in 2013 Electric FSAE event has been running in Germany since 2010
Three cars are expected to attend FSAE-Michigan this year Will perform “demo” runs in all Dynamic events Not part of the official scores, but will be timed Avg speed = ? / Top speed = ? Who’s Faster? Electric or Combustion? We will see!
