INTEGRATING IPADS AND

TABLET COMPUTERS INTO LIBRARY

SERVICES, PART II

October 20, 2011

Discussion from Part I More practical applications and examples Finding funding for tablet programs Apps for librarians and educators Productivity apps Strategies and resources for staying up to date on apps and

tablets Final Q&A

OVERVIEW OF WEBINAR, PART II

If you have a new question, send it in via chat or Twitter, and we’ll get to it later in the workshop!

PART I DISCUSSION & QUESTIONS

Q&A 1: WHY TABLETS?

VS.

What do tablets do that netbooks, for example, don’t or aren’t able to do?

Q&A 2: WHEN TO BUY

“Things are changing so quickly…”

Why should we commit now to a particular technology?

Q&A 3: ISSUES WITH LENDING

• Managing devices

• Privacy concerns

• iTunes account

• Policies & agreements

• Apps

Quick Poll: If your library circulates tablets, how long is the loan period?

• Security• Restrictions• Certificates for

wireless• administrative

PROFILES

Profi les/Accounts do not act as diff erent user accounts on laptops or desktops

Profi les are administrative for things such as restrictions and security

Accounts are connected with user; how the user interacts with apple

All apps are visible on iPad – no matter how many accounts are used on single iPad

PROFILES VS ACCOUNTS

Sync data between devices

ACCOUNTS

If a user adds an app or other content through his/her own account, he/she still has access to it, just not on the returned device

The returned device can be wiped, restored to factory settings, and then synced with the institutional/library iTunes account

This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, depending on how much content needs to be restored.

Q&A 4: FLASH ISSUES

Apple’s Thoughts on Flash for iPads, iPods, and iPhones: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

• Open• Full web• Reliability, security,

performance• Battery life• Touch• 3rd party layer of

softwareAlternatives?• Apps such as Skyfire, Frash (requires jailbreak), iSwifter, Cloud

Browse, and Photon

Q&A 5: ROVING REFERENCE

• Logistics?• Apps?• What happens to the

reference desk?

Roving reference can take place inside the library or off site, within another building entirely

Roving reference can augment library services in a variety of library environments

Off site: Mobility and convenience for students and faculty

Within the library: Being proactive in reaching out to students

Ease and convenience for librariansUsers’ ability to identify roversCommunication with other staff members

THE LITERATURE

Today, we’re going to look at a variety of libraries and other institutions using tablets in unique and interesting ways: Newman Library at Virginia Tech: iPad tours Innovation Space at Virginia Tech: Lending tablets NCSU Libraries: Lending tablets University of Utah: Lending tablets Montlieu Academy of Technology: Classroom use of tablets Houston Public Library: In-house use of tablets North Shore Public Library: In-house use of tablets

TOURS

Five iPads that can be checked out at the library circulation desk for library tours

Screencasts on each section of the libraryNumbered QR Barcodes linked to screencastsBarcodes are scannable iPad scans code and tells student about that part of

the libraryBeautiful in its simplicity

SET UP

Initial tours done by other universities relied on students personal devices to scan the QR barcodes.

When iPad 1 came out wanted to wait for 2 because knew that a camera would be on it.

iPads aren’t much good without the apps. This tour took advantage of QR barcode app that offered a tour option for students who might not be able to make the normal tour times.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

Innovation Space, Virginia Tech

WHAT IS INNOVATION SPACE

It is a multimedia computer lab open to the students, faculty, and staff of Virginia Tech, as well as the local general public, with the mission of providing assistance through free and open access to software, hardware, and specially-trained staff.

Montlieu Academy of Technology High Point, NC

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARY

Image from Montlieu Academy of Technology

GRANT

Montlieu was given a half million dollars for all of their students, approximately 430 students, to have an iPad.

They stay at school. But next year 4 th and 5th will get to take them home.

Teachers each got an iPad and a Mac Book Pro as well as cart for charging

Tech Person hired for training

LESSONS

Every lesson must use the iPadsCan’t get rid of paper and pencil

completely (of course), but much less of it

Everyone is learning togetherOften students are teaching the teachersLibrarians use them during library timeMusic teacher during musicAcross entire school

EXAMPLES

Facetime to read books from another room

Facetime to speak to class when teacher is not at school that day

Digital pen pals using Facetime with other schools across the country or world

Letters Learning for Letters

Doodle Buddy for letters

Take screenshots of work to show parents for parent/teacher conferences

APPS & CONTENT

Rocket Math for math skills

Communication by e-mail for parents.

Concept mapping tools

Cutting and pasting skills

Safari/Internet searching skills

Parents are learning too from their children

FOR TEACHERS

Meet every quarter and share apps. Have to “sell” your app. The best apps get purchased for the educators.

Teacher Pal: Seating arrangements, picture of the child, information on each child. Very useful for substitutes.

Differentiated instruction for the children. 21st Century learning skills and Technology skills for the teachers.

Houston Public Library

Program specifics:3 iPads available to enhance “early literacy stations”Children (accompanied by a 14+ yearold) can check out for 1 hour Includes educational apps to aid in “literacy and

mathematical development”

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:IN-HOUSE PUBLIC LIBRARY USE

North Shore Public Library, NY

Program Specifics 8 iPads Checked out to patrons with a library card Can be used anywhere in the library To replace children’s gaming computers Internet connectivity cut off Use Children’s Technology Review (

http://childrenstech.com/) to find relevant apps

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:IN-HOUSE PUBLIC LIBRARY USE

Many of the projects we’ve highlighted in this webinar have become a reality because of grant funding or other donations.

Tumblr site updated with resources: http://tabletsinlibraries.tumblr.com/funding

FINDING FUNDING

Last week, a participant asked about a sample budget for a tablet program

Considerations for putting together a budget will include: Devices: Which ones? How many? Accessories Physical storage space and technology Staff training Maintenance Apps and other content

SAMPLE BUDGET

APPS

Short for applicationSometimes with very specific function Don’t multi-task Screens are smallerFast and quick beats flexible

WHAT ARE APPS?

Replace desktop with “webtop” future will be less about browsing and more about

getting.Store electronically – access any where with any thing

THE WEB IS DEAD

Advantages

QuickAccessible from

anywhereViewable on small

screenAccessible on

different devicesEasily updated

Disadvantages

Do not multi-taskEnd up with a great

quantityOrganization can be

a problem

APP

Although this webinar will not focus on building apps, if you’re interested in pursuing that, here are a few basic needs:

Instructional or App DesignersGraphic Artist/ProgrammersApp Testers if budget will allow or the rest of the

team can test app. Rubrics or standards to test the appSubjects to try out the app

BASIC NEEDS FOR APP DEVELOPMENT

For iPad, iPod touch and iPhone – App store on iTunesFor Android

Amazon App store Android Market

Blackberry App WorldSome websites will also have an app to download

SO WHERE DO YOU START

APP STORE
