OUR MESSAGE

OUR MISSION

At SVKM it is our unwavering endeavor to teach our children the importance of upkeep of our surrounding .

One way of doing it is by developing a feeling for Nature .

The opportunity to participate in the design for change contest is very overwhelming .

Our Plan of Action

Our children were particularly concerned about the unclean beaches in Mumbai due to waste thrown( paper, plastic) especially after the occasion of Gauri and Ganapati Immersion .

ACTIVITY 2 : Vermicompost (Wealth from waste)They also wanted to create awareness on how kitchen waste can be recycled and decided to begin from the school canteen area which was their main concern .

ACTIVITY 1: Beach cleaning drive .

1. What we felt ?We felt that there is little awareness in our People to maintain cleanliness on of the beaches of Mumbai like the Juhu Beach .

After the process of immersion of Ganapati and Gauri Visarjan these beaches become unbearably Unclean so it we felt that it was our prime Concern to make these beaches clean .

2.What did we imagine ?

We imagined that our beach should be neat ,clean and beautiful as a beach should be . Hence keeping this aspect in mind we ourselves took

the initiative to keep our beaches clean.

3. How did we implement ? We took the task in our own hands and

decided to set an example for the people at large .

Our children, along with the teachers went to the Juhu beach, the next day after Gauri immersion to clean the beach themselves .

They were equipped with gloves and aprons and even carried garbage bags to collect the waste.

THE ENTIRE EVENT WAS COVERED BY CNBC TV18.

ACTIVITY 2:Vermicompost

We felt that: A lot of kitchen waste can be Recycled and Reused if there is awareness on how to do it . More productive and easy ways of recycling waste must be implemented so that people at home or living in societies can help each other and recycle waste on regular basis .

:

Kitchen is an avenue of mass waste . It can be segregated into dry and wet waste The waste from the kitchen like the Vegetable and fruit peelings can be collected which is then used as a raw material for initiating the process of VERMICOMPOST .

WHAT WE IMAGINED ?

WE:

How did we implement ?

We Educated the employees of the school canteen on Importance of segregating the waste. We showed them the ways of collecting waste in separate containers . Identified an area in the school campus where a pit could be dug to throw the waste and cover it with layers of soil . Took the help of the school gardener to dig the pit .

Further in this process layers of the kitchen waste was put along with the layers of soil and surrounded with dry leaves.

The introduction of the earthworms enhanced the process of decomposition which converts the organic matter into inorganic matter and this is the natural manure .

This process is called as Vermicompost .
