Part 2 of 8: His Baptism

How, when and by whom were you baptized?

I was baptized on24th December 1998

in Morib Beach, Bantingby Rev. William Singam

in the order of the Anglican Church!

Throughout history the sacrament of baptism has been a controversial and even a dividing subject

among believers, theologians and churches as we stand by different perspectives.

The issues are such as the argument in regards to the method of baptism whether it be:

Immersed or Sprinkling or Affusion?

How does the baptism Christ relate to our lives today?

1. Baptism

by John the Baptist

John the Baptist’s preaching and ministry involved the act of outward baptism.

It is important to understand the method and purpose of his baptism.

John 1:2626 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water...

Matthew 3:1111 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance

Mark 1:44 …appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 3:6 (also in verse 6)...they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

John’s baptism was a water baptism which was an outward act of repentance by a person from their sins in order to receive God’s forgiveness (Luke 3:3).

2. His Baptism

In light of the above understanding does Jesus need to be baptized by John?

Matthew 3:15 15 But  Jesus  answering  said  to  him,  “Permit it at  this time;  for  in  this  way  it  is  fitting  for  us to  fulfill  all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.

The Order of Events of Jesus’ Baptism:

1. Jesus comes to John to be baptized (Matthew 3:13)

2. John the Baptist objects (Matthew 3:14)

3. Jesus was baptized by John (Mark 1:9)

4. He went up out of the water (Matthew 3:16)

5. Jesus was praying (Luke 3:21)

6. Heavens opened & Holy Spirit descends (Mark 1:10)

7. God the Father speaks to Jesus (Matthew 3:17)

Jesus underwent baptism as He represented all mankind- He did it for US! (Luke 3:23-38).

2 Corinthians 5:2121 He  made  Him  who knew  no  sin to  be sin  on  our behalf, so that we might be come the righteousness of God in Him.

3. His Baptism Transforms

His baptism thus was not only symbolic event but a transformative event for us.

His baptism was the beginning of his ministry and also the beginning works for our salvation.
