Personality Disorders and Suicide
Personality disorders are estimated to have been present in 30% of completed suicides and 40% of attempted suicides. Suicide occurs disproportionately in cluster B personality disorders. The rates of completed suicide in patients with borderline and antisocial personality disorders are 8% to 10% and 5%, respectively. Patients with borderline personality disorder have very high rates of suicide attempts (60%-75%).
Self-injurious and self-mutilating behaviors are common in borderline personality disorder (e.g., cutting oneself) but much of the time do not represent suicide attempts. Cluster C personality disorders account for about 10% of completed suicides, and cluster A personality disorders account for less than 1% of completed suicides.

Risk in population = 100,000 = 9% 1,000,000
Relative risk = 16% ÷ 4% = 4
Population risk difference = 9% - 4% = 5%
Risk difference = 16% - 4% = 12%
Etiologic fraction
(16% - 4%) ÷ 16% = 0.75
note:
(relative risk -1) ÷ relative risk =(4 -1) ÷ 4 = 0.75
Population etiologic fraction
(9% - 4%) ÷ 9% = 0.56
