WHAT IS GSM ?

Global system for mobile communication , a mobile phone

system based on multiple radio cells.

Two main standards :-1. GSM 900 – Designed for extensive radio coverage in rural

areas2. DCS 1800 – Designed for radio coverage in areas with very

high subscriber density

WHAT IS GPRS?

It is new non voice value added services that allows information to be

sent and received across a mobile telephone network.

WHAT IS AN EDGE?

Edge- Enhanced data rates for global evolution.It is 3G technology that delivers broadband. It allows consumers to connect to the Internet and send & receive data.

GSM( Global system for mobile communication )

SMART AND SECURE GSM is so secure & flexible with its functionalities & so easy to manipulate.GSM subscribers are identified by their SIM card.

SIM CARD

-SIM is removable.-Subscriber inserts it in mobile station unit.-Provide PIN,which is compared with PIN stored within the SIM.

GSM ARCHITECTURE

GSM ARCHITECTUREGSM system is basically designed as combination of 3 subsystems:-Switching subsystem ( SSS )-Radio subsystem ( RSS )-Operation and maintenance subsystem (OMS )

COMPONENTS OF RSSRSS consists of :-Mobile Equipment (ME)-Base Station (BS)-Radio Interface (Um) BS includes :-Base Transceiver Station (BTS)-Base Station Controller (BSC)-Transcoding & Rate Adaptation Unit (TRAU)

COMPONENTS OF SSS

SSS Consists Of :

-Mobile Services Switching Centre (MSC)-Home Location Register (HLR)-Visitor Location Register (VLR)-Authentication Centre (AC)-Equipment Identification Register (EIR)

OMS ( OPERATION & MAINTENANCE CENTER )

An OMS consists of one or more operation & maintenance center.

-The OMC is connected to all equipment in the switching system & to the BSC. -The implementation of OMC is called the operation and support system (OSS). -The OSS is the functional entity from which n/w operator controls the system.

CELL: is the area covered by one base transceiver station.

Location Area: is the group of cells.

MSC/ VLR service area: represents the part of GSM network that is covered by one MSC.
