Singapore Food

• What is Singapore food? Briefly, It has its origin in Malaysia, Indonesia, China and India. Many claim that there is no such thing as Singapore food for that reason. They are only partially right. You'll still find the most authentic and tastiest of each of the cuisines. What has been happening to the various cuisines since their first arrival a century or so ago is what we now proudly call Singapore Food.

Desserts in Singapore

• Tantalize your taste buds and immerse yourself in the tasty tale that is uniquely Singapore! In this food paradise where eating is a 24-hour passion, one word every Singaporean knows and loves is ‘makan’ (Malay language for "eat"). With Singapore’s unique heritage – it lies at the crossroads of the great East-West trade routes – it’s no wonder that this cosmopolitan city boasts a fascinating and exciting range of authentic local cuisines, which evolved through the years from recipes handed down from generations of migrant settlers

Nonya Food ( 娘惹糕點 )

• Nonya food combines Chinese, Malay, and other influences into its own unique taste. The Peranakan people are actually descendants of early Chinese migrants who had settled in Penang, Malacca, and Singapore, and who had inter-married the local Malays. The men are called "Babas" and the women "Nonyas".

• Basically, Nonya food combines Chinese ingredients with Malay spices and herbs, thus bringing together the culinary skills and flavor of both cultures. The results of this combination are dishes that are imaginative, tasty, and extremely subtle in taste. Chilies, belacan, and coconut milk are central to the unique flavors of Nonya dishes.

• One should always leave room for desserts. Nonyas are noted for their scrumptious and colorful cakes and sweet, sticky delicacies.

•Peanut Pancake - As the name suggest. The traditional version is very thick. Thin varieties with various fillings are now popular

• No one makes good egg tarts better than Crystal Jade's Chain of Chinese Restaurants. Their tarts are made bite- size, and with a crispy pastry shell. Being of HK extraction, I've tried many egg tarts, but this place's takes the cake (tart?). Incidentally, they also serve the best classy Cantonese food in town- their seong tong ( soup) is just divine. - Edward Yong
