Going ForwardEncountering God and Experiencing Change

Isaiah 6:1-9 (NIV) “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim,

each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying…

…And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a

man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have

seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”…

…Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your

sin atoned for.”

…Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

He said, “Go and tell this people:    “‘Be ever hearing, but never

understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’

1. His Look Upward.

Isaiah discovers what the writer of Psalms 121 had previously discovered: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills, from where comes my help. My help comes from the LORD, which

made heaven and earth...

…He will not suffer your foot to be moved: he that keeps you will not slumber. Behold he that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper: the

LORD is your shade upon your right hand."

When you look up you will see:• A. The Lord Is Pre-eminent

(Vs 1: “…sitting on a throne)• B. The Lord Is Priestly

(Vs 1: “Priestly robe”)• C. The Lord Is Pure

(V3: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord..)

2. His Look Inward.

• a. Note The Conviction He Experienced: (Vs 5: “Woe is me !”)

• b. Note His Condition Was Exposed. (Vs 5: “A man of unclean lips”)

• c. Note The Confession He Expressed. (Vs 5: “I am a man of unclean lips”)

• d. Note The Cleansing That was Effected. (Vs 6-7 …the Angel touched his mouth with the coal)

Having seen his sinfulness, and having been cleansed, note the

next thing that takes place in Isaiah’s encounter with God.

3. He Looked Outward. V8What happened when he

looked outward?

• A. He Was Attentive. (Vs 8: “I heard the voice of the Lord”)

• B. He Was Available. (Vs 8: “Here am I”)

• C. He Was Agreeable. (Vs 8: “Send me!”)
