Source Criticism

Using Passover in the Old Testament handout, match the passages with the context:

• The time around the Exodus

Scripture and its Sources

Priestly

Probably after the period of Jewish exile in Babylonia.

Yahweh

Probably committed to writing at the time of Solomon but goes back longer as an oral tradition. God is called Yahweh, translated ‘the LORD’.

Deuteronomic

written down sometime after the reign of King Josiah (640 to 609 BC).

Elohim

Probably the earliest sourceGod is called Elohim, translated as ‘God’

• As history: – meanings and messages intended by the authors and

understood by the audiences of the time • As literature:

– detailed questions of origin, authorship, style, language and transmission

• In cultural context: – an expression of the culture from which it came

• As a devotional tool: – how the Bible speaks to individuals today
