Change from a $10.00 dollar bill

If you spend $1.85 at the ice cream store, and you pay with a $10.00 dollar bill, you get $8.15 in change. Notice that the digits in your change are the same as the digits in the amount you spent? There are five other amounts you could spend and get change with the same digits. See if you can find them all. List them in your journal. Do you see a pattern?

Coin Riddle

You need: 4 dimes and 2 pennies, concealed inside a small sack or envelope.

Present clues to the class in sequence given. After each clue, have groups discuss what they know for sure about what is in the bag. Write their statements in their journals. Ask if they have sufficient information to guess the coins you have or if they need another clue.
