Glandular Epithelium(Practical)

Glands are classified according to the number of cells:

• Goblet cells which are present in the lining epithelia of intestine and the respiratory tract.

A. Unicellular glands

• Salivary glands, lacrimal glands, sweat glands, …

B. Multicellular glands

2

Unicellular gland

Mucus cells or goblet cells

3

• Goblet cells produce Mucin• Mucin + water mucus• Protects and lubricates many internal body surfaces.

4

Goblet cells in the intestine 6

Exocrine glands secrete substances to specific organ/surface via duct systems.

7

Multicellular Gland

Classified according to the duct system and the secretory part

Duct

Secretory part

TubularAcinar

(alveolar) Tubulo-acinar

9

Exocrine pancreas, parotidSublingual and submandibular

Simpleexocrine glands

10

Simple tubular

A single, straight tubular lumen into which the secretory products aredischarged eg. mucus-secreting gland of the colon; crypt of Lieberkühn 11

12

Simple coiled tubular

13

A single tube, tightly coiled in 3 dimensions eg. Sweat glands14

15

17

Simple branched tubular

Several tubular secretory portions (T) converge onto a single unbranched duct (D) eg. Mucus-secreting gland of the stomach and uterus

18

19

Simple acinar

Occur in the form of pockets in epithelial surfaces. Lined by secretory cells eg. Small mucous glands along the urethra.

20

21

Simple branched acinar

Each gland consists of several secretory acini (A) that empty into a single excretory duct eg. Sebaceous glands, sebum secretion 22

23

Compoundexocrine glands

25

Compound tubular

Secretory portion is branched and coiled and the duct system is also Branched (difficult to visualize) eg. Brunner’s gland of the duodenum 26

27

28

Compound acinar

Secretory units are acinar and drain into a branched duct system

eg. Exocrine pancreas/ parotid 29

Parotid gland

Pancreas 31

Serous gland

Pancreas

1- serous acinus2- islets of Langerhans ( endocrine pancreas)3- duct4- connective tissue septum

32

Compound tubulo-acinar

3 types of secretory units:branched tubular, branched acinar and branched tubular with acinar end-pieces called demilunes eg. salivary gland 33

34

Compound tubulo-acinarMixed gland: Seromucous gland

Submandibular gland 36

Compound tubulo-acinarMixed gland: Mucoserous gland

Sublingual gland 37
