Report Writing in Banner

Banner gives you the option of using the report writing tool of your choice

Banner provides few standard reports

Banner has no instant ad-hoc query tool

Typical Report Philosophy

Usually if you need some information - you go to someone else

End-user is dependent on technically trained staff for information (in any form -- labels, reports, mail-merge data)

SJU Reporting Philosophy

Every single end-user should be able to get information independently

in whatever form they want when they want it

Information delayed is information denied!

- Unknown SJU user

Why is report writing difficult?

Due to the way Banner stores the data the main applicant data elements for

each person are stored in 20+ different tables

To write reports you need to know 100’s of data elements, rules and characteristics from those 20+ tables

What is Object:Access / ODS?

Banner Object:Access / ODS is a complex technical database architecture which provides direct and simplified access to thousands of data elements to make report writing easier.

Is Banner Object:Access / ODS suitable for every end-user?

To write reports you still need to know 100’s of data elements and value rules but from only one applicant O:A / ODS views - instead of “those 20+ tables”

End-users need to have fair knowledge of one of the desktop report writing tools (such as Microsoft Access, Crystal Reports, etc. )

How to make Object:Access / ODS suitable for every end-user?

Make 100’s of Object:Access data elements transparent to the end-user

Eliminate the need for having expertise in a report writing tool
