O b itua ryWe have come today to honor the life of our loved one. One
who was the inspiration and joy of the lives she touched. Our loved one, Maria B. Bates, entered into immortality February 9, 1991, at her home.
Maria B. Bates was born November 17, 1917, to the late Eph and Ludie Byrd. She attended the Pittsburg Public Schools in Greenwood County. She joined the Willow Spring Baptist Church at an early age and after uniting in holy wedlock to the late Henry "Buddy” Bates, she united with Lockhart Baptist Church until her death. Maria was a devoted wife, a loving, caring, sharing mother, a responsible loved grandmother and friend.
She leaves to mourn her passing seven children, Susie Bell B. Craig, St. Louis, Mo., William H. Bates and Jessie J. Bates, both of Greenwood, S.C., Annie Ruth B. Freeman, Saluda, S.C., Esther Lee B. Bush, Columbia, S.C., Rosie Mae Bates, St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Delois B. Dukes, Saluda, S.C.; two grandchildren raised in the home, Ernestine Bates of the home, and Priscilla B. Cheeks, Columbia, S.C.; 18 grandchildren; and 11 greatgrandchildren; six sisters, Cindy Wilson and Valarie McKinney, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Sallie Williams, and Rosa B. Collins, both of Washington, D.C., Effie McManus, Newark, N.J., Carrie White, Forestville, Md., four brothers, Juba Byrd and Charlie Byrd, both of Washington, D.C., Thomas Byrd. Greenwood, S.C., James Byrd of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sons-in-law, Robert F. Freeman and Johnny E. Dukes, both of Saluda, S.C., and George E. Bush, Columbia, S.C.; one daughter-in-law, Emmie L. Bates, Greenwood, S.C.; two brothers-in-law; and three ?isters- in-law; a number of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
