1. Long shot, aka wide shot (LS). Camera appears far from the focal point or
action. This shot establishes everything
relevant to that sequence. It introduces the
location, time or theme of the story. Provides
context for a story. Some define a LS as
enough dis- tance to show a standing person
from head to foot, with a bit of head room.

2. Medium shot (MS)The camera appears about 2 to 3 meters
(8-10 feet) from the focal point or action. A
MS of a person typically breaks at mid thigh.
MS serves as a bridge between long shot
and close-up shots, moving the viewer closer
to the action.
3. Close-up shot (CU)Camera takes a detailed, often intimate, look
at people, objects or actions. CU of people
includes the full head and shoulders.
Emphasis on expression, emotion, texture,
detail.

4. Extreme close-upCamera zooms in very tight on a face: showing
just the eyes, nose and mouth.
5. Cut-inA close-up on a detail within the establishing
shot.
6. Cut-awayA close-up on a detail outside the establishing
shot.
7. In-frame, out-of-frameShot begins with or without out people in the
scene. Subject enters the frame, passes through
and exits the scene. Very useful for cutting.

8. Motivated panCamera moves horizontally, left or right. Generally,
it ends by showing a person, object or action that’s
important to the story line.
9. Motivated tiltCamera moves vertically up or down, ending on an
important person, object or action.
10. Point of view This is actually two shots: the first is a close-up or
extreme close-up of the subject, emphasizing her/his
eyes. The second can be any kind of shot, but the
psychological carry-over from the first shot is that
the viewer is now seeing the scene through the eyes
of the subject, that is, from her/his point of view.
