CASE Thomas Ryan from a security company, Provide Security, created a fakeprofile for a woman named Robin Sage, who posed as a Navy
cyberthreat analyst and tried to befriend around 300 real people in theUS military, defence contractors, information security companies andintelligence agencies. It was a 28 day experiment to find out how socialnetworking sites could be used to covertly gather intelligence. The saidfake profile attracted dozens of connections across sites includingFacebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, including a senior intelligence official inthe US marine corps, the chief of staff for a US congressman and severalsenior executives at defence contractors, as well as an official from theNational Reconnaissance Office, which builds, launches and runs US spysatellites. Some of the friends who connected with the said fake profileshared personal and professional information and photos, which Ryanclaims could have compromised corporate and possibly even nationalsecurity. The experiment and its study were showcased by Thomas Ryan
at the BlackHat security conference held in Las Vegas, USA. The result of the experiments shows that how easy it is to conduct social engineeringfor nefarious purposes like data theft.
