Drugs

Let’s get some facts!

DRUGS• Marijuana

• Hashish

• Hashish Oil

• Psilocybin

• Amphetamines

• Methamphetamines

• Barbiturates

• Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

MORE DRUGS• Herion

• Codeine

• Cocaine

• Crack

Cocaine

• Opium

• Ecstasy

• Morphine

• Alcohol

The Facts: Cannabis• MARIJUANA, HASH, HASH OIL

• MOST COMMON DRUG USED BY TEENAGERS IN NORTH AMERICA.

• IT IS 5 TIMES MORE HARMFUL THAN CIGARETTES!

• THERE ARE 350 CHEMICALS IN IT!

AN EXAMPLE• 10 Professional Pilots

– 5 marijuana users– 5 who never use marijuana

• The 5 users, smoked a standard joint. The other 5 did not.

• 24 Hours Later…

• Using a flight Simulator, all 10 were tested in various ways

• How do you think it turned out?

THE RESULTS• ALL 5 Pilots who had smoked marijuana

the day before had difficulty aligning with and landing on the runway.

• They had even greater difficulty hitting the centre of the runway.

WOULD YOU FEEL SAFE IN THEIR PLANES??

SHORT TERM EFFECTS• Sleepiness• Impaired short term memory (losing track of the

time)• Lack of concentration and coordination

– SUCH AS DRIVING VEHICLES!• Increased Heart Rate• Bloodshot Eyes, Dry Mouth & Throat • Paranoia, Panic & Hallucinations• Lack of Motivation…. And the list goes on.

LONG TERM EFFECTS

• Psychological Dependence– Requiring more of the drug to achieve same

effect.

• Impaired Memory

• Enhanced Cancer Risk

• Now Let’s Look at the Different Effects it has on Guys and Gals!

FOR THE GUYS• Marijuana affects the part of the brain

which controls the sex & growth hormones.

• Sometime, enlarged breasts in male marijuana users are triggered by the chemical impact on this hormonal system.

• Regular marijuana use can decrease sperm count but increase in abnormal sperm.

FOR THE GALS• Like males, marijuana affects your hormones and

growth. – Which may also affect your menstrual cycle by making it very

irregular.

• It may take several months of no marijuana use before the menstrual cycle becomes normal again.

• Fetal Marijuana Syndrome is occurring 5 times more often than Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. – Resulting in learning disabilities, attention deficits and hormonal

irregularities in the baby.

What do you think of the term

GATEWAY DRUGS?

Let’s talk about it.

Let’s take a look at

HARD DRUGS

AMPHETAMINES aka SPEED• Speed, uppers, grudge, blues, ups, bennies

• Amphetamines can be snorted, swallowed, injected, dissolved in a drink or smoked.

• The purity of this drug is usually only about 5%

• The rest mixed with other white powders, ranging from talcum powder and toilet cleaner! Yuck.

AMPHETAMINES aka SPEED

• Amphetamine use can lead to:– Short-term dizziness– Hallucinations– Burst blood vessels (can lead to paralysis)– Insomnia – Depression

• As you become more tolerant to the drug, you need larger amounts to produce desired effect.

• This may lead to dependence or addiction.

METHAMPHETAMINE• A HIGHLY ADDICTIVE stimulant

• It can be injected or smoked.

• Produced in large labs in small toxic labs.

• Frequently ‘cooked’ in makeshift labs in homes, trailers, motels and sometimes cars.

• Chemicals used in ‘meth’ manufacturing are extremely dangerous and often lead to fires and explosions.

METHAMPHETAMINE EFFECTS

• Meth remains in the central nervous system even longer than cocaine and chronic abuse produces a psychosis that resembles schizophrenia– Paranoia– Picking at the skin– Preoccupation with one’s own thoughts – Auditory and Visual Hallucinations.

• Violent & erratic behaviour is often seen in users.

• These effects can last for months and even years after using methamphetamine.

ECSTASY aka MDMA• Adam, E, Roll, X,

XTC, Love Drug• Taken in pill form,

users sometimes take Ecstasy at "raves," clubs and other parties to keep on dancing and for mood enhancement.

ECSTASY aka MDMA• Ecstasy produces

– intensely pleasurable effects– confusion, depression, sleep problems, – drug craving– severe anxiety, and paranoia during and

sometimes weeks after taking MDMA – psychotic episodes have been reported – involuntary teeth clenching– a loss of inhibitions– nausea, blurred vision, chills and/or sweating. – Increases in heart rate and blood pressure– seizures are common.

ECSTASY aka MDMA LONG TERM EFFECTS

• Serious cell damage in the part of the brain that produce serotonin

• Serotonin regulates our moods, appetite, pain, learning and memory.

• There already is research suggesting Ecstasy use can disrupt or interfere with memory.

• Damage to dopamine containing neurons (underlying cause of the motor disturbances seen in Parkinson's disease)

• Symptoms may eventually result in a form of paralysis.

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide aka LSD

• ACID, LSD, Blotter, Cid• It is a hallucinogen which distort perceptions

of reality • Small squares of absorbent paper soaked

with the chemical (chewed and swallowed)• LSD is the most potent mood- and

perception-altering drug known• For example: one dose as small as 30

micrograms can produce effects lasting six to 12 hours.

LSDLONG TERM EFFECTS

• LSD- induced Psychosis– May include dramatic mood swings– Loss of cognitive & communication skills &

hallucinations.

• Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) aka ‘Flashbacks’– Flashbacks involve seeing bright flashes, halos or

trails attached to moving objects long after LSD was used.

– Flashbacks can last a few seconds or SEVERAL hours.

– Underlying personality problems will intensify these reactions ALTHOUGH people with no history of psychological disorders will experience them too.

LSDSHORT TERM EFFECTS

• Very unpredictable and depend on:– amount taken– the user's personality, mood, and expectations– surroundings in which the drug is used

• The physical effects include:– dilated pupils– higher body temperature– increased heart rate & blood pressure– sweating, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, dry mouth, and

tremors. • The user may feel several different emotions at once • the drug produces delusions and visual hallucinations.• Many users have described the experience as frightening.

HERION • Big H, Brown Sugar, Dope, Junk, Smack• Can be injected, snorted/sniffed or smoked• All routes deliver the drug to the brain at a

rapid rate.• Injecting the drug releases the drug

directly into the bloodstream. • Derived from Morphine • THUS, IT IS A “DOWNER” or a depressant.

HERION: LONG TERM EFFECTS– Addiction– Collapsed Veins– Infection of the heat lining and valves– Liver Disease– Depressed Respiration – Physical Dependence leading to painful withdrawal

symptoms (bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea/vomiting, cold flashes and many other symptoms).

– Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48-72 hours and last about a week straight.

– Withdrawal can be FATAL.

HERION SHORT TERM EFFECTS

• Heroin abuse symptoms begin to appear after a single dose.

• Surge of euphoria “a rush” comes along with a warm flushing of the skin, dry mouth

• Mental functioning becomes clouded due to the depression of the central nervous system.

• Slow slurred speech, vomiting & constipation.

COCAINE• Coke, Candy, Dust, Powder, White

• Cocaine is a paste extracted from the leaves of a South American coca plant made into a white powder.

• Often mixed with sugar, cornstarch, vitamins and flour.

• Can be injected, smoked, sniffed or snorted.

Cocaine: Long Term Effects

• Extreme Agitation

• Violent Mood Swings

• Depression

• Snorting cocaine can cause ulcerations in the mucous membrane of the nose resulting in nose bleeding.

• Heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes and seizures are common.

Cocaine: Short Term Effects

• Immediate sense of euphoria with increased energy.

• Usually followed by agitation, depression, anxiety, paranoia and lack of appetite.

• Cocaine is very potent and dangerous.

• Short term effects are incredibly dangerous– Heart attacks and seizures are a high risk.

CRACK COCAINE• Crack is cocaine base that has not been

neutralized by an acid to make the hydrochloride salt.

• It comes in a rock crystal that is heated to produce vapors which are smoked.

• The term ‘crack’ refers to the crackling sound produced by the rock as it is heated.

• Users report being hooked after ONE use.

AND ONE YOU MAY HAVE FORGOT ABOUT

ALCOHOL

ALCOHOL • Alcohol is created when grains, fruits or

vegetables are fermented (a process that uses yeast or bacteria to change the sugars in food to alcohol)

• It is absorbed into their bloodstream resulting in an effected central nervous system (which controls virtually ALL body functions).

ALCOHOL CONTINUED• Based on your Body Mass Index, alcohol affects

the body differently.

• Ex: 160 lbs – after 2.5 drinks, your blood alcohol level has reached 0.08 % Making you liable for a DUI

• MEN: The body can metabolize .5 oz per hour

• WOMEN: The body can metabolize .25 oz per hour.
