And it all started out so well!

The window has always been an important architectural element, adding balance and elegance. The balcony, however was just treated as a decorative feature.

Things started to go wrong when we tried to turn the balcony into a living area. Typically, it just ended up being used as a storage space which cut out the light and spoilt the facade.

You only have to look upwards to see cluttered balconies (bikes, boxes, chairs..) to see that they are not an attractive nor an elegant idea.

The balcony had to bereinvented!

Imagine.... you are enjoying a meal and you want to take advantage of the great weather.

Just slide one panel, two panels,...

....and, by simply sliding all the panels, you go from inside to outside.

MORE THAN A WINDOW, LUMICENE IS A LIVING AREA

Unlike a standard balcony or terrace, LUMICENE is an inherent part of your living area. It extends the apartment by integrating it with the living area. The apartment becomes centralised around the LUMICENE which is not only an inside/outside interface but also links the kitchen, hall and living room. In this way, LUMICENE provides structure and flexibility to the whole living area.

Neither a bow-window, veranda nor terrace, LUMICENE is a cir-cular balcony area, redefining the link between the inside and the outside.

ADVANTAGES 7.

With LUMICENE, you are not simply inside or outside, but are able to switch between both, giving great flexibility depending on the light and weather conditions.

PROTECTION FROM THE SUN

Based on «green» principles and sustainable development, LUMICENE is the only bioclimatic structure of its type on the market today. The different positions optimise the suns warmth and our comfort.

By optimising the buildings’ thermal inertia and with dynamic ventilation, LUMICENE helps create a «low energy home».

LUMICENE absorbs the suns energy all day, warming the room by the glass-house effect.

The panels are on the inside. The glass surfaces are then in the shade to stop over-heating.

By using the optional external shutters the thermal comfort is further improved.

Bioclimatic

A true bioclimatic design must manage the effect of the sun as well as that of the wind.

This is managed by by the sliding panels which provide protection from any direction.

Wind Protection

Panoramic vision, light and quality space.Three crucial qualities to interest potential buyers.

AVANTAGES 10.10.ADVANTAGES

When you are inside, LUMICENE increases the useful interior area and when you are outside, it increases the size of the balcony.

Either way, LUMICENE provides more useful space and is self-financing thanks to the extra saleable area.

ADVANTAGES 11.

Autofinancing

AccessibilityStricter building regulations demand improved access and facilities for the disabled. With LUMICENE there are no gaps or steps. The increased light and access to the panoramic view can be fully appreciated.

The pictures below show comparisons between a LUMICENE and a standard balcony. The accessibility impact is immediately obvious.

Both inside and outside surfaces can easily be cleaned - in total security. Just slide the panels to access both surfaces.

User manuals are not required as the operation isintuitive. Open a lock at each end and the sliding panels can be freely positio-ned.

12.12.ADVANTAGES

Easy to maintain

Practical

LUMICENE is the result of succesful alliance between an innovative company and an industrial giant. The LUMICENE company and the St Gobain Group are linked through its subsidiary Sovedys by an exclusive licence.

LUMICENE is built integrally by Sovedys and the Group provides a full 10 year building warranty.

LUMICENE is a room in its own right (typically 12m2) and is usually used as a dining area.

The various LUMICENE diameters allow it to be used for other things such as larger rooms, pools, Jacuzzis or rest rooms in retirement homes.

MOTORISED CURVED BLINDS

Thanks to a built in storage space and a curved runner, the blind follows the LUMICENE shape.

Single or volume orders accepted.Large choice of sizes and materials.

ACCORDION DESIGN

The panels slide on curved rails and fold up like an accordion.

Wood or aluminium.

MOTORISED SHUTTERS

The shutters slide on curved rails and roll up inside two storage colu-mns. The polyurethane-filled slats are available in RAL colours.

Technical Notes

28.TECHNICAL NOTES

LUMICENE has curved glass panels running on two circular, concentric rails, top and bottom - all independent of each other. The external rail also acts as a sill. The inside rail is completely recessed into the floor finish and the concrete base. The top rail is simply a guide - it does not support the weight of the panels which slide on the bottom rail. It does, however, support the false ceiling which is necessary for both aesthetic and constructional reasons.

All the aluminium profiles have been specifically engineered for LUMICENE.The circular top rail is manufactured using numeric process control, ensuring millimeter precision - an essential property for a smooth sliding action. A patented thermal barrier has been developed for the curved profile.

The St Gobain signature guarantees the high performance glass. This is 16mm, laminated, low emission, argon filled as standard.

LATERAL SEALS

The seal between the panels and the pillar extremity is provided by a triple barrier consisting of automotive type, deformable seals. The result is a very high quality air and water seal.

At the top and bottom of the panels, a block is linked to the locks, ensuring a perfect seal.(Exclusive to LUMICENE)

Method 1 : Prefabricated concrete beam

Installation

34.INSTALLATION

All the configurations below use the same method : a prefabricated concrete beam. The following pages describe the advantages.

36.INSTALLATION

Cross-section

1 For ceiling heights of 250cm, the 225cm height LUMICENE is used. This choice is mainly aesthetic as the LUMICENE area is then clearly defined independently.

2 Using the 225cm height LUMICENE allows a lintel to be used which is normally necessary for structural reasons. A gap of 10cm is usually left between the underside of the lintel and the LUMICENE, to allow for a false ceiling and constructional tolerances.

3 The top rail is never fixed directly to the building structure. The use of a prefabricated, curved beam is strongly recommended as this guarantees a quality assembly and allows for any building imprecision.

4 Using a false ceiling complies with fire regulations concerning transmission between floors.

5 LUMICENE requires a concrete floor. The bottom rail is mounted on the rough concrete base. The rails are fitted using adjustable screw-jacks providing millimetre-height precision. Once the floor finish has been added, the rail is perfectly flush with the floor.

6 LUMICENE is an internal space. Inter-level insulation is therefore not necessary. The false ceiling only requires insulation if on the top floor. Prefabricated beams with a thermal bridge are available on request.

7 A range of standard safety rails have been designed for LUMICENE.

8The inside is finished with a curved plaster-board panel which fits into a slot in the top rail.

37.INSTALLATION

OUTSIDE LOWER RAIL

The bottom outside rail is of a conventional design. It serves as a drain and also compensates for concrete thickness. It has integrated adjustable screw-jacks and an external sealing strip.

OUTSIDE TOP RAIL

The outside top rail assembly is manufactured from solid PVC and curved aluminium, using numeric control techniques. A curtain rail is incorporated. The mounting method provides full three dimensional adjustments.

39.INSTALLATION

INSIDE LOWER RAIL

The bottom rail has been designed to be integrated into the finished floor. It is mounted on an adjustable height plate incorporating a silent block to provide an acoustic bridge when the concrete floor is laid.

INSIDE TOP RAIL

The top inside rail is of the same design as the top outside rail. It is fixed by an adjustable suspension system and has a slot for the curved plaster board panel.

Method 2:Between two concrete floors

Installation

42.INSTALLATION

This method does not use a prefabricated beam but is simply installed between floors, either using a balcony extension or within the building volume.

Flush with the building to meet regulations or protruding to improve the view.
