And Ch. 26 Section 3 The New order and Holocaust

The End is Near in Europe1. After liberating France The allied forces

closed in on Germany from the West.2. The Battle of the Bulge was Germans final

offensive, hoping to break through the Allied lines Hitler sent all his forces to attack , their ultimately failed.

Significance: It was only a matter of time before all allies would meet in Germany

1. From the East Soviets quickly swept through Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria & the Balkans

2. In 1945 the Soviets entered Germany and met US and British forces at the Elbe river

Significance: Europe is know completely liberated (VE day)

Our Fearless LeadersHitler moved into a bunker under Berlin, where

he committed suicide on April 30th

Two days before Hitler committed suicide Mussolini was shot by Partisans

Partisans: resistance fighters

Significance: Europe is free of the Fascists dictators

The End is Near in the Pacific1. After the Victory at Midway, American forces

targeted Japanese held islands. Using a system of Island hopping

a. Island hopping was strategy of only attacking certain key islands to reach Japan quicker

Significance: The US was closing in on the mainland of Japan

2. After two long and costly battles against Japan(Iwo Jima & Okinawa) The US leaders knew that

the war in the Pacific would last a long time and cost many American lives

Significance: leads to the decision to use the Atomic Bomb

3. Harry Truman, replaces FDR after his sudden death and makes the decision to drop not one but two Atomic Bombs

a. First on Hiroshimab. Second on Nagasakic. Millions died on impact and millions died from radiation

later

Significance: VJ day Japan Unconditionally surrendered on Aug. 14

The Death toll: The Nazi’s killed more than 6 million Jews, with over 3 million in Death camps alone.

Nazi’s also killed about 9 to 10 million non-Jewish people. Including gypsies, Slavic's, homosexuals, the mentally and physically disabled and more.
