Write in your sketch book: Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all

over the artwork. Repetition works with pattern to make the artwork

seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the artwork.

Discuss with your tablemates: Did Vincent Van Gogh use pattern in his painting

Starry Night?

The natural world abounds in eye-catching patterns.

Our relationship with nature's patterns yields both an infinitely rich display of beautiful things and a manifestation of the underlying order in our world.

For Example:

Virus, mold and bacterial aggregate colonies spontaneously assume Fractal Shapes

Identify and write in your sketch book three patterns you see in nature, then add three

man-made patterns to your list.

Yes, you may talk and share.

Day 3 Bell stART ELEMENTS of DESIGN

Today’s goals:

1. Use a sharpie marker to write your name on the front cover of your sketch book

2. Use the paper provided to tape a “pocket” to hold loose papers in your sketch book.

3. Use crayon to render the “Work of a Master”.

Jasper Johns’s “Between the Clock and the Bed” (1982-83), encaustic on canvas,

was partly inspired by a late self-portrait by Munch.

Day 4 Bell StART Elements of Design

• Write in your sketch book the terms and their definitions then draw the three motifs that will be used in your pattern composition

• Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area will be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

• Motif a distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition.
