THE HISTORY OF DARBAR • Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib in Dehradun is a

philanthropic organization of the Udaseen sect . Sri Guru Ram Rai ji, the eldest son of the seventh Guru of the Sikhs- Sri Har Rai ji, had established it for protecting and spreading the traditions, ideals and philosophies of Hinduism Dehradun owes its name and history to the emergence of Sri Guru Ram Rai ji who came to this then small , Sri Guru Ram Rai ji who came to this then small , green Arcadian abode way back in 1676

• He established his ‘ DERA ‘ in Doon Valley which later became popular as ‘DEHRADUN’ During the reigns of Aurangzeb , the doon valley was Guru Maharajji’s property. The Britishers could enter it only after taking permission from the Darbar Sahib. Darbar Sahib still owns a large part of this property.

• The Building of the Darbar Sahib is an epitome of Islamic and Hindu architecture.The building contains domes, minarets, gurudwara , Mural paintings reflecting a mixed culture and represent spiritual enlightenment.

• Till date people of all classes, castes and creed visit the Darbar Sahib.

• Sri Guru Ram Rai ji was born on Chaitrawadi Panchami- the fifth day of Holi in 1646 at Kiratpur,District Ropar in Punjab. In his sacred memory one of the famous fairs of Northern India-that is the Jhanda Fair of Dehradun is celebrated every year which begins on the day of his birthday which incidentally coincides with the day of his arrival at Dehradun in 1676.

• Sri Guru Ram Rai ji left for his heavenly abode in 1687.After that Sajjada Nashin Sri Mahants have been ascending the ‘Gaddi’ and were persons of extreme wisdom with a strong sense of devotion, commitment and service to mankind. The ninth Sri Mahant Indiresh Charan Das ji established Sri Guru Ram Rai Education Mission and brought a revolution in the field of education.

• In a short span of holding the Gaddi he has completed number of tasks like renovation & preservation of building and Mural paintings at Sri Darbar Sahib, Restoration of ‘sarover’ infront of the Darbar sahib, Lodging facilities for sangat and devotees, Ensuring Maintenance & Modernization of 122 schools & colleges including institute of technology & pharmacy college and building of more education centers in remote areas.

• The CROWNING GLORY of Shri Mahant Devender Das Ji has been the completion and successful running of Shri Guru Ram rai Medical College and associated Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital & its initiation into the service of the common man. The medical college has 750 beded multispeciality and superspecilaity hospital with the name of Shri mahant Indiresh Hospital situated in the heart of the city nealry 2 Kms. From both the railway station and Bus Terminal.

• The hospital started in 2002 and the medical college got the permission by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi to start its first MBBS Bacth from 2006. The MBBS Degree is recognised by MCI and MOHFW. The postgraduate (MD/MS) courses started in the year 2011.

THE JHANDA MELA 2016• Every year in Dehradun, after the Holi festival is over, the

JHANDA MELA is organised at the Guru Ram Rai Darbar. The Guru had established the Udasin sect in Dehradun.

• The mela was held on 28th March, 2016.• Lakhs of devotees gather at Guru Ram Rai Darbar on the

inauguration of the four day Jhanda Mela to mark the birth anniversary of the Guru.

• The mela commences with the cleaning of the mast bearing the flag of Guru Ram Rai and the removal of the last years wraps.

• The credit of performing of bringing down and re-raising of the mast as a community fair goes to Guru Ram Rai’s wife Rani Punjab Kaur

• The faith in the guru draws lakhs of pilgrims from all the religions from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

• In the morning the Jhanda (mast) is brought down. The devotees then bathe the 100 feet pole with ganga jal and milk. After this the mast is wrapped in new set of clothes.

• The opportunity of bringing the cloth wrap and performing the ceremony is given to the devotees on a first come first served basis. This year it was done by Shri Bahadur Singh, a native of Ropar District in Punjab. He had booked this 25 years ago.

• A total of 20 velvet covers, one darshani cover and 40 covers made from cotton cloth are used to cover the mast. The pilgrames offer this as a gesture of thanksgiving and fulfillment of their wishes.

• The flag pole is then raised by the present Mahant Shri Devender Das Mahraj admist raising of religious chants and slogans.
