XMP (eXtensible Metadata Platform)

XMP is a standard for processing and storing standardized and

proprietary metadata, created by Adobe System Inc.

Unlike other metadata standards, XMP embed its information in the

final digital file.

XMP can be used in PDF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, HTML, TIFF,

PostScript, EPS. (It is possible to use XMP in AVI, MOV, MP3, etc.)

CC is recommending XMP as the preferred format for embedded

metadata; to store the rights management information.

23/16

XMP

XMP uses XML format to describe the metadata and stores the data

into the digital file itself. (This means that the legacy devices can still

copy/delete the XMP embedded files.)

It is easy for the devices (DSC, DVD Player, Camcorder, etc) to

WRITE or to READ the CC rights information to the digital files using

XMP metadata.

– Difficulty level: WRITE(1) < READ(3) < MODIFY(7) (easiest: 0)

– Estimated LOC (For producing devices such as DSC or Camcorder) is less

than 500 (for WRITE/READ operations without UI and XML library.)

If the writing devices uses XMP/CC, the reading devices such as (DVD

player, TV, etc) can fully access to the user-generated contents, can

expose more contents to the public/Internet without copyright

concern. Thus, more people can benefit from the CC licensed media.
