10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her.” A survey of the Gospels reveals many ways in which Jesus upheld the dignity of women. In a culture where women were considered second-class citizens, Jesus was never afraid to encounter women, to affirm them, and to welcome them among his followers. He regularly broke rules about interaction with women and understood the value of women’s religious testimony. In today's Gospel we see another aspect of Jesus’
respect for women. Here we see that his heart was stirred by the situation of this grieving mother. The man who had died was “the only son
of his mother, and she was a widow.” In other words, this woman had just been stripped of her primary focus in life. Also, in this culture, a woman was protected by her father, her husband, or her son. Absent one of those men in her life, she was in an incredibly vulnerable position. This, along with the grief of losing her child, struck the Lord with pity. “Do not weep,” he told her, clearly moved by her sorrow. And then, he did the impossible and restored the dead man to life. But he did more than this. After “the dead man sat up ... Jesus gave him to his mother.”
. In our culture, women have earned a much more respectable status and are no longer dependent upon men. But, at times,
the noble and irreplaceable role of mother is still undervalued in society. Too often, women who devote themselves to this vocation are dismissed as unimportant. Christ himself reveals, through his ministry to this mother, that her role is vital. May we also find ways to affirm and serve the mothers in our midst.
Fr. Scott Huggins
Final Sunday as Pastor of Visitation Parish
The Sunday Masses of June 11 and 12
Following each Mass there will be a Reception with light refreshments. We invite you to stop by and share a moment with Fr. Scott who has spent these past six years with us. Join us in saying thank you. Drop a card or note in one of the baskets for Father to thank him for his prayers and ministry here at Visitation, and to offer your prayers as he moves on to his new community.
Fr. Scott became the fifth Pastor of Visitation Parish in June, 2010. He has impacted many lives during his leadership of the parish through his homilies, his dedication to our school, his involvement in many ministries, his active participation in our lives, and most importantly, through his prayers and celebration of the sacrament s. Let us join together as a parish family in wishing Father Huggins well as he begins his new assignment as Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton in Naperville.
Father Scott will begin his new assignment on June 22. His new mailing address will be:

FAITH FORMATION
Faith Matt-ers

The History and Development of the Mass (June 5, 2016) The 50-day season of Easter ends each year with the celebration of Pentecost, when, according to Acts 2, the Church was
born through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We then take two Sundays to transition back into Ordinary Time. The Sunday after Pentecost is always celebrated as Trinity Sunday, for through the resurrection of Christ and the outpouring of the Spirit God was revealed to us as a Trinity of divine love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Last Sunday was the Feast of Corpus Christi, a yearly celebration of the centrality and gift of the Eucharist in our Catholic faith. As a way of helping us to better appreciate the gift of the Eucharist and the mass, for the next several months, I would like to explore the roots of the Eucharist in the New Testament and the development of the mass over the course of Christian history.
First, let’s summarize what the New Testament reveals about the Eucharist. The gospels of Mark (written circa 70 AD), Matthew (circa 85 AD), and Luke (circa 85 AD) all recall Jesus’ words and actions over the bread and wine at the Last Sup-per. Luke also ends his gospel with the wonderful story of the risen Jesus appearing to the two disciples on the road to Em-maus, who come to know him “in the breaking of the bread.” John (written circa 90 AD) does not mention anything about the bread and wine at the Last Supper, instead focusing on Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet. It is in John 6, the Bread of Life Discourse, that the author conveys his eucharistic theology in this gospel.
Of the 13 letters attributed to Paul in the New Testament, only 1 Corinthians 10-11 refers clearly to the Eucharist. Here Paul, writing circa 57 AD, reprimands the Christians in Corinth for their divisions at the weekly Eucharist, which at this point was connected with an evening fellowship meal. Paul reminds them of the Last Supper tradition which he had handed on to them, in order to call them back to their original communion. Paul also reveals the very “charismatic” nature of the early Eucharist, in which people with a variety of gifts of the Spirit contributed in unique ways to the celebration. Finally, Acts of the Apostles, written circa 85 AD by the same author who wrote the gospel of Luke, tells the story of the early church, from Pentecost in 33 AD to Paul’s arrival in Rome circa 66 AD. In this story, the author mentions at several points the celebration of the Eucharist (which the author calls “the breaking of the bread”). Unfortunately, while all of these New Testament refer-ences to the Eucharist reveal the central importance of this ritual in the early church, they give us little detail about how the Eucharist was celebrated and who presided.
On another note, for the past few weeks in the bulletin I’ve been running an ad for The Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet (BIDJ). This program of Catholic Bible study has been offered at a variety of parishes in our diocese for the past several years. Our own parish of Visitation has been chosen as the newest site, and the program will begin here at the end of Sep-tember. Dr. Joan Gorski is the director of the BIDJ and an excellent Scripture scholar and teacher, and she also enlists the help of other teachers for the program. I have taught in the BIDJ for the past five years and have found it an awesome pro-gram. If you have ever wanted to deepen your understanding of God’s word in the Bible, and you are interested in learning more about the BIDJ, I encourage you to attend one of the upcoming “Preview Sessions” at Visitation on June 15 and Sep-
tember 10, or at a few other nearby parishes on other dates. Please see the ad below for more details.
“Come and See” Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet (BIDJ)
The Diocese of Joliet has chosen Visitation Parish as the site this September for Year I of the BIDJ.
If you’re interested in learning the Bible, but aren’t sure if this is the program for you, join us for a BIDJ Preview Night. You’ll learn a lot about this great diocesan pro-
gram—and a few things that will help you with Scripture right now.
Jesus invited potential disciples to “come and see.” We invite you to “come and see” how BIDJ can help in your
relationship with Scripture and with Christ. + Learn about the Catholic approach to Scripture.
+ Meet a BIDJ instructor. + Talk to current BIDJ students.
+ Learn how this kind of Scripture study can help you grow in your Catholic faith.
+ See the resources used in this program. + Get a feel for a typical BIDJ class.

Divine Mercy Corner
Jesus said to St. Faustina: “The two rays [in my image] denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls…These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross. These rays shield souls from the wrath of My Father. Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him.” (Diary, 299)

Novena of Confidence to the Sacred Heart O Lord Jesus Christ, to Your most Sacred Heart, I confide this intention (mention your request).
Only Look upon me, and then do what your
Sacred Heart inspires. Let your Sacred Heart decide. I count on it. I trust in it.
I throw myself on Your mercy, Lord Jesus! You will not fail me!
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Your love for me.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, may Your Kingdom come. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I have asked you for many favors,
But I earnestly implore this one. Take it. Place it in Your open, broken Heart;
And, when the Eternal Father looks upon it, Covered with Your Precious Blood, He will not refuse it.
It will be no longer my prayer, but Yours, O Jesus. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.
Let me not be disappointed. Amen. Jesus once said to St. Margaret Mary, “Behold this
Heart which has loved men so much, and yet is so little loved in return.” Jesus is in the Adoration Chapel. Visit Him who loves you so much, whose heart yearns to be one with yours. Sign up for an hour with a friend!
The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a serious need for an adorer on Sundays 12:00 noon to 1:00 #". For more information, call Joan Taylor 630-530-8963 or Mary Lewis 630-941-9173.

Confessions of St. Augustine
The Confessions of St. Augustine ranks among the most important books of Christian literature. Written in the year 400, the first nine books of this classic spiritual autobiog-raphy chronicle St. Augustine’s education, upbringing, career, quest for truth and eventual discovery in the Chris-tian faith of all that his heart and mind had so long sought. The book club addressed these books in a meeting two years ago.
This year, we will read and discuss the remaining four non-narrative books (10 thru 13),which provide a discur-sive exploration of God and draw on the themes that are identified in Augustine’s autobiographical search, includ-ing memory, time and eternity, and the nature of reality. In the final book, St. Augustine brings us full circle back to our origin and telos, the Triune God, in whom we live, move and have our being, and in whom, along with Augus-tine, we can find peace for our restless hearts.
Join us for an interesting discussion of this less well known part of St. Augustine’s masterpiece on June 16, 9:30 to 11:30 !.". in the Hospitality Room of the Parish Center.
Please contact Madonna Muscarello at 630-325-7990 or at gracicakes@gmail.com with any questions and/or for a copy of the study guide. Both readers and visitors are welcome.

New Parishioners, Welcome! Call or stop in the Rectory Office to register as a member of Visitation Parish.
Baptisms Most Sundays at 1:30 #.". Parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation Class beforehand. Classes are held every other month, so please plan ahead. Call the Rectory for information.
