Short Vort – Toras Chaim
Straight talk
Devarim 13:19 "To do that which is "yashar" (straight) in the eyes of HaShem
The sections of the Torah of which deal with the false prophet, the seducer to idola-
try and the city of idolatry are all tests to follow HaShem and not to fall under the
influence of a persuasive leader or a seductive ideology. A person needs to make
sure that a leader's words are consistent with God's Torah Many Jews have been
enticed into idolatry and falsehood during the course of Jewish history. Life's lesson: A leader's message needs to make sense and be aligned with Torah
values
"Neither borrower AND lender be"
Devarim 15:6 You will lend other nations and not need to borrow. You will rule over
them, and not them over you. Chasam Sofer explains that these apparent opposites
are indeed possible even at the same time. When you are so dependent on your
possessions to the point that you cannot afford to ever miss a day of business, then
you may appear to be a lender, but in a real sense you are living like a person who is
a borrower. Similarly, if you have no time to develop your relationship with God be-
cause of your commitments to the values of the nations of the world, then the na-
tions of the world rule over you, even if you appear to be superior to them, intellectu-
ally and economically. Life's lesson: Know who is your master
If you are not going up you are going down
Devarim 11:26 See, I am placing before you a blessing and a curse
Sforno points out that God wants us not to choose complacency i.e.
“middle of the road.” Vilna Gaon points out that if we do not rise upward then we
fall downward. Life's lesson: Am I advancing or am I retreating?
Even easy mitzvos need chizuk
Devarim 12:23 "strengthen yourselves not to consume blood."
Rashi reminds us that not eating blood seems to be one of the easier prohibitions to
avoid as most people do not have a strong desire to consume blood. Nevertheless
the Torah tells us to strengthen ourselves to avoid transgressing.
Rav Nosson Tzvi Wachtfogel z"l explains that one needs strength even to avoid easy
transgressions. A lack of passion to avoid transgression will eventually lead to trans-
gression. Life's lesson: Do not underestimate the enemy (yetzer hara)
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

Elul – A month of opportunity
The Community Shul will be partnering with Project Inspire’s newly created
program for Kiruv/learning that is perfectly tailored to the current environ-
ment! The program starts in Elul and goes for 3-4 weeks, once a week. Rabbi
Melnick, the Aish Rabbi in Santiago, Chile has prepared sources/maareh me-
komos and will give guidance as needed for presentation and Project Inspire
has the software tools necessary to contact people, keep track of everyone’s
progress and to make contact and connection simple and efficient. Stay tuned
for more details in the coming weeks if you would like to be mentors/teachers
or student. The gedolei yisroel in Europe before WW2 said that the avodah of
Elul was CHESED! There is no greater chesed than kiruv rechokim!
Our High Holiday plans
A great deal of thought and discussion has gone into our High Holiday planning to ensure first and foremost your
personal safety, and the comfort for our members for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Assuming nothing changes be-tween now and the holidays, we have plans to use the en-tire back space of Milky Way and the shul, and also part of the alley, with a covered roof, outdoor seating using our
comfortable chairs and tables, market lighting and ceiling fans. We are contemplating two services both led by Rabbi Moshe Cohen and Elchonon Cohen, and depending on the governor’s decrees, we may in addition be able to use the
shul with social distancing. We thank you for your patience and commitment to our shul.
May you have a safe and healthy new year!
