ON HIATUS Parshas Re’eh Shabbos Mevorchin Candlelighting: 7:22 PM | Shabbos ends: 8:24 PM August 14, 2020 — 24 Av 5780 Short Vort – Toras Chaim Straight talk Devarim 13:19 "To do that which is "yashar" (straight) in the eyes of HaShem The sections of the Torah of which deal with the false prophet, the seducer to idola- try and the city of idolatry are all tests to follow HaShem and not to fall under the influence of a persuasive leader or a seductive ideology. A person needs to make sure that a leader's words are consistent with God's Torah Many Jews have been enticed into idolatry and falsehood during the course of Jewish history. Life's lesson: A leader's message needs to make sense and be aligned with Torah values "Neither borrower AND lender be" Devarim 15:6 You will lend other nations and not need to borrow. You will rule over them, and not them over you. Chasam Sofer explains that these apparent opposites are indeed possible even at the same time. When you are so dependent on your possessions to the point that you cannot afford to ever miss a day of business, then you may appear to be a lender, but in a real sense you are living like a person who is a borrower. Similarly, if you have no time to develop your relationship with God be- cause of your commitments to the values of the nations of the world, then the na- tions of the world rule over you, even if you appear to be superior to them, intellectu- ally and economically. Life's lesson: Know who is your master If you are not going up you are going down Devarim 11:26 See, I am placing before you a blessing and a curse Sforno points out that God wants us not to choose complacency i.e. “middle of the road.” Vilna Gaon points out that if we do not rise upward then we fall downward. Life's lesson: Am I advancing or am I retreating? Even easy mitzvos need chizuk Devarim 12:23 "strengthen yourselves not to consume blood." Rashi reminds us that not eating blood seems to be one of the easier prohibitions to avoid as most people do not have a strong desire to consume blood. Nevertheless the Torah tells us to strengthen ourselves to avoid transgressing. Rav Nosson Tzvi Wachtfogel z"l explains that one needs strength even to avoid easy transgressions. A lack of passion to avoid transgression will eventually lead to trans- gression. Life's lesson: Do not underestimate the enemy (yetzer hara) Good Shabbos, Rabbi Cohen
