What exactly is cloning?

Cloning is the creation of an

organism that is an exact genetic copy of another.

This means that every single bit of DNA is the same between the two!

4

Dolly the sheep

She was born on 5 july 1996.She was cloned by Ian Wilmut and keith

campbell in ScotlandWas the first mammal to be cloned

Died from a progressive lung disease.

5

Herd of mice

The cloned mammals was a mouse

(named "Masha") , in the Soviet Union.

The cloning was done from an embryo cell.

The first mouse from adult cells, Cumulin, was born in 1997 at the University of Hawai'i at

Mānoa.

Over a dozen clones as of 2002.

6

Cat (CC)

Was born in December 2001,

scientists at Texas A&M University

created the first cloned cat, CC

(CopyCat).

7 Ethical Issues of Human Cloning

8

History of Cloning:

South Korean scientists create several cloned human embryos which they only allowed to develop for a short while – just long enough to extract embryonic stem cells which could be used in the treatment of disease.

This was the world's first ever cloned human embryo in 2004.

9

Experiments conducted: Failed Experiments

1999

Scientists secretly placeda human cloned embryointo a pig. The cell onlylived to be 32 days old.

Dec. 2002

A company called Clonaidannounced that they

successfully cloned thefirst human. Experts say

it is impossible for thecompany to clone a human

due to inadequatetechnology.

10

Future of Human Cloning

“Either we control gene technology today, or technology will redesign usby tomorrow.”

11

Process of Cloning:

Donor egg Remove cells from person to

be cloned

Human egg donor

Surrogate mother with cloned baby

Implant embryo into surrogate mother

Cell

Egg fused

with cell

Fuse cell and enucleated egg with

electricity

Embryo

Remove nucleus

Medical issues:

• Possible miscarriage or still birth• Deformities• Unforeseen deaths in later life of the clone• Health risks from mutated genes• Developmental delays• Lung problems• Heart defects• Neurological disorders• Unstable immune system

13

Pros and Cons:

Pro’s

•Cloned body parts can serve as backup systems for humans•Solution to infertility•Combat genetic diseases•Replicate animals for research purposes•Enable alterations of plants & animals.•Produce people with desirable traits

Con’s

•Weaken diversity & ability of adaptation•Production of undesirable traits•Technical & economic barriers: cost effective? Reach the Common man?•Invites malpractices into society•Human & animals rights at stake•Ethical & moral principles•Undermining human life•Devalue mankind•Human’s acting as God.

Cloning looks like a degrading of parenthood and a perversion of the right relation between parents and children.-Leon Kass….!!
