Cause and Effect In the Rock Cycle

An Igneous Rock starts out as liquid rock called magma.
There Are Two Kinds of Igneous Rock
• If magma cools and hardens inside Earth, it becomes an intrusive Igneous Rock.
• If magma comes to Earth’s surface, it is called lava.
• When lava cools and hardens on the surface of Earth, it becomes an extrusive Igneous Rock.
Igneous Rock can change to Sedimentary Rock

Moss weathers an Igneous Rock. The moss produces an acid that breaks
rock down into sediment.

Sediments are transported by moving water to a lake or ocean.
Sediments are compacted by the weight of the water above.
Igneous Rock can change to Metamorphic Rock

An intrusive Igneous Rock is formed deep underground.

An intrusive Igneous Rock is heated up by nearby magma, but does not melt.

The crystals become larger, and the rock becomes denser.

Granite is an Igneous Rock often used to make countertops.
