Caloosahatchee River (C-43)West Basin Storage Reservoir
The South Florida Water Manage ment Districtis a regional governmentalagency that manages thewater resources in thesouthern part of the state. It is the oldest and largestof the state’s five watermanagement districts.
Our Mission is to manageand protect water resourcesof the region by balancingand improving flood control, water supply, water qualityand natural systems.
FEBRUARY 2017
The Comprehensive Everglades RestorationPlan, the Congressionally approvedframework for restoring, protecting andpreserving the water resources of centraland southern Florida, calls for constructionof the 170,000 acre-foot CaloosahatcheeRiver (C-43) West Basin Storage ReservoirProject. It will help store and manage basinrunoff for meeting estuary needs during thedry season.
Project DescriptionLocated on 10,700 acres of former farmlandin Hendry County, Fla., west of Labelle, theCaloosahatchee River West Basin Storage(C-43) Reservoir will hold approximately170,000 acre-feet of water, with themaximum depth ranging from 15 feet to 25feet across the expanse. When complete, therestoration project will provide storageneeded for the estuary by capturing andstoring local basin runoff as well as Lake
Okeechobeeregulatoryreleases. Thiswill reduce lakedischargesreaching theestuary, improvethe health of theCaloosahatcheeEstuaryrevitalizing fishand oysterhabitats byreducing thefrequency ofundesirablesalinity ranges.
Releases of water from the reservoir duringthe dry season will provide essential flows, resulting in improved salinity balance, survival of young fish and shellfish andimproved ecological health. The reservoir ispart of an overall solution to restore theriver that includes water qualityimprovements, storage and operationalchanges.
Purpose and Benefits
• Capture and store stormwater runoff from the C-43 basin, reducing excess water flow to the Caloosahatchee Estuary.
• Capture and store federal regulatoryreleases from Lake Okeechobee, reducingdischarges to the coastal estuaries.
• Improve the salinity balance for theCaloosahatchee Estuary by controllingpeak flows during the wet season andproviding essential flows during the dryseason.
Project StatusThe design of the project, which was initiallycompleted in 2008, is now being updated tomeet the current dam safety standards.
Demolition work on the site and preloading ofearthen mounds that will be used to build thereservoir is well underway and expected to becompleted in August 2017. The construction ofthe S-476 Pump Station associated with thereservoir is expected to be completed in April2018. The entire reservoir project is expected tobe completed by 2022 at a cost ofapproximately $500 miliion.
Water releases from the Caloosahatchee River Reservoir will provideessential flows during the dry season, improving the ecologicalhealth of the Caloosahatchee Estuary.

The above ground CaloosahatcheeRiver (C-43) West Basin StorageReservoir, located in Hendry County, will capture and store stormwaterrunoff from the C-43 basin andregulatory water releases from LakeOkeechobee, reducing lakedischarges reaching the estuary.
The Caloosahatchee River is approximately 75 mileslong and is a major tributary to Charlotte Harbor. Itextends from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf Coastwhere it forms the Caloosahatchee Estuary.
