HECKER QUOTE “Christianity teaches that the soul is the image of God, His living imageand likeness. The image has the capacity to take on its original, thereforeunions with the soul and God is not impossible. God has united HisDivinity with all the infinite attributes of our humanity without change oralteration of either, in one personality. This is called theIncarnation. God became man. There was one who was true God andtrue man, he is called Christ!” [Epiphany Sermon, Rome]If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, andyou believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud,CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

Pastoral CornerMany thanks to all for your prayers and good wishes. My father died peacefully on Sunday, January 25th at3:15am. His final weeks have been a graced time for my family. My mother was his main caretaker during the lastyears of his coping with heart problems. We siblings have grown closer to each other and to Mom as we helped Dadwith feeding, personal care, arranging for home health care and finally, hospice. There are many indignities at thatstage of life, as people do the personal care that you are used to doing for yourself. Dad was very dignifiedthroughout the process and never complained. He just took things a day at a time.

My sister has been in town from New York for a few weeks to help my mom. She and my brother, who had justarrived the night before from New Jersey, were there to help him enter into eternal life. I am grateful for my father, who has been my role model my whole life. Having shown us children how to live for so many years, he has nowshown us how to die. He died the way he wanted to - at home with no tubes or IV’s or pain medications. His mindwas clear until the end.

I always say that we grow up in a family of origin, but we must leave that family and create a new family - a “familyof choice.” I am grateful to the Paulist Fathers, especially Michael Evernden, Charlie Brunick, and Jim Kolb, my

“family of choice,” for accompanying me in this time of loss.

It is so long since I have celebrated the Eucharist with you!!! I have been helping with Spanish and English massesat Saint Anne’s church in Gresham for four weekends until their pastor, Fr. Jose Luis Gonzales, could return from hisvacation in Mexico. After that came the archdiocesan young adult retreat weekend, January 23rd-25th. It was agreat learning experience for me to observe how the young adult ministry is done in the archdiocese. And it was achance for them to get to know me and imagine how I might assist in the archdiocesan young adult ministry. Ipresided and preached at the Sunday mass, and I was able to share the spirit of Isaac Hecker with them. Therewere 61 young adults present. But, none of them were from Saint Philip Neri. This is something for us to improveon for next year!!!

And, finally a note on the Gospel today. Jesus preaches the kingdom and the proclamation of the kingdom is met byresistance, but the presence of Christ heals those who are shackled by evil. He takes away the voice of evil “BeQuiet!” and releases the hold of evil “Come out of him!” He heals the wounds left behind by the grip of evil in theman’s life, and restores him to his family and community.
