HOOVER DAM is under way. The greatBoulder Canyon project of the United

States Government which has long made newsfor a nation now advances into constructionstages. And as action begins on the mighty Colorado,

comes a news item of vital interest to the con-struction industry and to the automotive world.Six Companies Inc., of San Francisco, a com-bination of six leading western contractorswhich is to build Hoover Dam under a bid of$48,890,999, has standardized on InternationalTrucks as qualified above all others to bear theheavy hauling responsibilities in their contract. The full meaning of this decision-the ex-

tent of the honor paid to International per-formance and service-can be appreciated onlywhen measured against the immensity of theproject itself.

TheJob-Space does not permit going into the details ofthe Hoover Dam project. They have long bee~matters of public record. Suffice it here to saythat the plan encompas~es :flood control andgeneral river regulation, irrigation, silt con-trol, power development and domestic watersupply affecting a large part of the Southwest. The entire enterprise involves an appropriationof $165,000,000 and includes many auxiliarydevelopments of great magnitude in additionto the dam itself. The dam will fill the gigantic chasm of the

Colorado River to a height of about 730 feetabove the foundations. It will be one-eighth ofa mile thick at the base, will contain about3,400,000 cubic yards of concrete, and will im-pound 30,500,000 acre-feet of water in an areavastly greater than Gatun Lake at the PanamaCanal. Millions of yards of rock and earth musthe removed; millions of tons of buildingmaterial must be hauled. Employment willbe given to thousands of men, the work

extending over a period of six to seven years.Today the canyon hums with intense activity.

"Boulder City" is springing into being like amagic town of gold or oil. Railways and high-ways are being built. Modern engineeringgenius is mobilizing to conquer problems thatstagger the imagination. Already work has be-gun on four great diversion tunnels each 50feet in diameter and nearly a mile long, to bedriven through the solid rock of the canyonwalls. These channels alone involve the haul-ing of nearly a million truck loads.

hauling, is banking on Internationals. Thefine performance ofInternationals in the serviceof the first sub-contractors on work in the canyononly made the choice the easier. Scores of Inter-national Trucks are now in process of deliveryat the site. The first :fleetshave long been on thejob, rugged, capable, and economical-admiredalike by the engineers, the drivers and theshovelmen who know full well how good eachtruck must be to stand the gaff.International Harvester is proud to have

Internationals selected for work on HooverDam. The news from Boulder Canyon is ofgreat practical value to buyers of trucks every-where. It provides another chapter of evidencecontributing to the high reputation of Inter-national Trucks. I
