What Is ForginE?-F'orsins is the shaping ofhot metalcompletely within the walls or caviti€s oftwo dies that come toeether to enclose the workpiece on all sides. The impression for the forging can be entiely in either die or divided betwe€n the top and bottom di€s.Impression-die forsing, often usedinterchanseablywiththe term closed-die forging, refers to a closed-dieoperationinwhichthe diescontain a provision for controllingthe flow ofexcess material, orflash, that is g€nerated.
Directional Streneth is a direct r€sult of the forying process. In the forying process, controlled deformation results ingreater metallurgical soundness and improved mechanical properties ofthe material. In mostcases, forging stockhas beenpre-worked to remove porosity resulting from the solidification process. This produces directional alignment, or "gtain flow",for impodant dircctional properties in strength, ductility, and rcsistance to impact and fatigue. These pmperties can bedeliberately o ented in directions requidng maximum strcneth.
Gr@in F otr,t is defined as fiberJike lines appearing on the polished and etched sections of mateial that are caused byorientation of the constituerts ofthe metal in the direction ofworking during forming. Grain flow produced by proper diedesign can improve th€ mechanical properties of forgings.
Forged BariDirectional alignment through the forging process has beendellberately oriented in a diredion requiring maximum strength. This also yields ductlllty and resistance to impact and fatigue.
lvlachin6d Bar:Unidiredional grain flow has been cut when changing contour, exposing grain ends. This renders the materlal more liable tofatigue and more sensltive to stress corrcsion cracking,
Cast Bar:No grain flow or directlonal strength is achieved through thecas0ng process.

A. Billet dumiuum or Bar Stock
Forging allows you to reduce your rrachining time and improve your partquality. By providing you with a shape that significantly reduces, or potentially, eliminates rnachining, your costs can be drastically reduced over other rnethods.
