Bone Fracture• A break in a bone .
What causes fractures?
• Excessive force applied to your bone
causes it to break or shatter.
Three types of bone fracture
• Comminuted fractures
• Greenstick fractures
• Spiral fractures
1.Comminuted fractures
• Bone fragment into
three or more pieces
2. Greenstick fractures
• Bone breaks incompletely, much a green in the way twig breaks. Only one side of the shaft breaks; the other side bends
3. Spiral fractures
• Ragged break occurs when excessive twisting forces are applied to a bone.
Fracture treatment and repair
1. Treatment
• Reduction:
1. Realignment of broken bone ends
2. Closed reduction- physician manipulates to correct position
3. Open reduction- surgical pins or wires secure ends
Treatment
• Immobilization by cast or traction for healing
• Depends on break severity, bone broken, and age of patient
Stage of bone repair: hematoma form
• Torn blood vessels hemorrhage
• Clot ( hematoma) forms
• Site swollen painful, and inflamed
