Today the river is a small stream and little of the freezing works can be seen except a few bollards (a post on a ship wharf ), and the remains of the tall chimney. The sight is now a reserve called Nelson Park named after the Nelson Brothers who built the works. The plaque below is on the chimney base marking 100yrs of the local freezing works industry.

REMAINS OF THE WORKS

Found at the end of Losiel Street.

HIPI AND TUNA

This is Hipi Hipi means sheep in Maori

Hipi and Tuna were tug boats which carried the meat down the Taruheru river out to the harbour where a ship was able to freeze the meat before sending it overseas. Hipi had a funnel that bent down when it went under bridges. My great great grandfather worked on the Hipi.
