Building Information Modelling

3.7 building information modelling (BIM)process of designing, constructing or operating a building or infrastructure asset using electronic object oriented information

BIM is a process for creating, managing and using digital information – not a software tool.

GIS data is typically object oriented – a feature encapsulates geographic and attribute information in a single object.

The major efficiencies are expected in the Operate stage of the lifecycle. Having the appropriate digital information is a key part of operating in a smart way – using technology.

Data as an asset

Adopting BIM involves a cultural shift in which digital data is seen as another asset and is managed and maintained appropriately.

The end customer of the project is no longer purchasing just the physical assets, but also a set of data products. The customer needs to understand their data requirements enough to be able to specify what’s needed.

Brief Site masterplan

Combining different information layers to understand the geographic context is a classic GIS use case, in this case applied to the development site. As well as the walk time isochrones, additional information on Listed Buildings and flood risk areas are being streamed via a web service.

Concept Overview Design

An interactive web map is a great way to present the concept design to stakeholders. Context information such as existing building use is easy to include.

Concept CityEngine 3D Design

CityEngine is a procedural modelling tool. Once a rule is defined it can be used to create a series of buildings with different characteristics. Changing the height of the building just needs an attribute change and the model gets regenerated.

Concept CityEngine reports

CityEngine can be configured to report on the characteristics of the concept model buildings, such as area and the number of components such as windows.

Analysis ArcGIS Pro

Bringing the CityEngine models into ArcGIS Pro allows analysis to be carried out on the concept design. This might include 3D analysis such as checking visibility from key vantage points.

Concept Engagement

ArcGIS can deliver interactive maps and 3D scenes via the web to support engagement.

It can also be used to facilitate feedback. GeoForm allows the feedback to be tagged to a specific location.

Design

Design tools work on a local grid and the geographical position of the design needs to be defined. Extracting the building footprints from designs and viewing them in ArcGIS allows their alignment to be checked.

Build Site operations

A large construction site has operational similarities with a finished facility. ArcGIS can be used to show the site plans in their geographic context. It can also be used to record and update key locations such as first aid stations and muster points.
