Bell Ringer!
– What document is Lincoln referring to when he says “…all men are created equal”?
– What is Lincoln referring to when he says “four score and seven years ago”?
• A ‘score’ = 20 years
– Did Lincoln think anyone would remember his speech? What did he want people to remember?
– What reason did Lincoln give that the Union must continue to fight?
As you watch…
Why is the Gettysburg Address considered Lincoln’s best speech?
What was Grant’s strategy for ending the war?
End of the War
• Grant takes over command of the Union army • “I can’t spare this man, he fights!” - Lincoln
• Total war on South – destroy food, equipment, anything else the South can use to fight
• Civilians and their homes also became targets
(William T.) Sherman’s March to the Sea• Took over Atlanta and burned
the city to the ground• Marched through Georgia
destroying everything in his path (“MARCH TO THE SEA”)– Ripped up railroad tracks– Killed livestock– Burned barns, homes,
bridges, and any factories
“Sherman’s Bow Ties”
Bent Railroadfrom “Total War”
Heat the tracksand wrapped them
around a tree
Sherman moves North• Once Atlanta was under siege, Sherman
moves his troops North through the Carolinas, using “total war” tactics along the way
The End is Near• Grant began a campaign to
capture Richmond in May 1864• He lost thousands of men in his
effort (knew Union could replace men and supplies, Confederates could not)
• Grant dug in at Petersburg (near Richmond)– Grant kept Lee under siege
for 9 months (took Petersburg April 2, 1865)
– Richmond fell the same day
The End of the War
• Lee withdrew to Appomattox Court House (small Virginia town)
• Union troops trapped Lee’s men at A.C.H.
McLean Family and the Civil War What are the odds?!!
• 1st battle of Bull Run fought on McLean property – they move to the village of Clover Hill, Virginia (the name of which was changed to "Appomattox Court House" because it had just become the county seat)
McLean’s and the Civil War• It can be said that
the Civil War started in McLean's backyard in 1861 and ended in his parlor in 1865!
• In the morning of Palm Sunday April 9, 1865 the war came back to McLean when General Lee surrendered to Grant at the McLean home
Terms of Surrender• Grant offered
generous terms– 1) Soldiers turned over
rifles (officers kept pistols)
– 2) Soldiers kept horses (needed for spring plowing)
– 3) Each man allowed to return home, without penalty from U.S!!
What happens to Davis?
• He attempts to flee but is captured
• He will serve about two years time before he is released
