How to plan for Nature?

Presentation of the working groups

Testing workshop

Camp Reinsehlen, 25 – 27 January 2012

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

Aim and goal of the exercise

Aim: to develop the skills to recognize nature-based solutions to common (spatial) planning challenges

Ultimate goal: maximize the rational implementation of multifunctional-land use and co-benefits between nature conservation and socio-economic objectives

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

Four groups Four landscape situations

– Rural village– Upland regional park– Coastal port– Urban setting

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

Three planning steps

Step 1. What do we have?– Create map– Assess socio-economic and ecological values

Step 2. What do we want?– Define policies and planning objective

Step 3. How do we get there?– Assess alternatives, opportunities and constraints– Use ecosystems approach

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

• create maps• assess values• define policies

Step 1 What do we have?

• developmentobjective

Step 2 What do we want? • planning

• presentation• review

Step 3 How do we get

there?

What do we have?

Landscape feature rating

Biodiversity

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

feature value description

biodiversity high Rich biodiversity including rare birds and plants

economy moderate Fruit for market

social moderate Employment

Ecosystem services

moderate Food production, water regulation, water filtration, aesthetic values Orchard

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

feature value description

biodiversity moderate Some biodiversity in gardens

economy high Value of real estate

social very high Living space

Ecosystem services

low No food or fibre production, water regulation hampered by sealing, water polluted by urban waste, limited aesthetic values

Houses

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

What do we want? (1)

Define nature conservation policies, including:

– Protection of biodiversity– No net loss of biodiversity (compensation, mitigation)– Promote ecosystem based solutions– Identify opportunities for restoration– Reflect climate change adaptation and mitigation– Integrate communication and public participation

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

What do we want? (2)

Local (sustainable) development, such as:

– Building houses– Reduce flood risk– Anticipate sea level rise– Improve urban public health and well-being– Increase generation and use of renewable energies– Improve transport infrastructure, etc

Development proposal given by the trainers

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity

How do we get there?

Review development request against the policies List possible bottlenecks, conflicts and impacts Discuss alternatives, especially biodiversity and

ecosystem services co-benefits Review the map to analyse possible siting and

impacts
