Antwerp – city on the Scheldt, city of Rubens,
of diamonds, of fashion, a port city... The
sum of all these different aspects is what
makes Antwerp into a real city: a vibrant,
welcoming metropolis, which is also great
fun and heart-warming, with green areas where you can
relax and peaceful corners. Antwerp is a veritable cultural
capital, which prides itself on its impressive architecture
and splendid art. Moreover, Antwerp is a fashionista’s
dream destination thanks to the stores of its world-
renowned designers. The cafes only serve the best beers
and foodies can enjoy the most delicious traditional and
multicultural cuisine in the city’s restaurants. Antwerp: a
pocket-sized metropolis which is sure to conquer anyone’s
heart in no time at all.
CultureAntwerp had an artistic reputation in the 17th century, based on its school of painting, which included Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, the two Teniers and many others.
Informally, most Antverpians (in Dutch Antwerpenaren, people from Antwerp) daily speak Antverpian (in Dutch Antwerps), a dialect that Dutch-speakers know as distinctive from other Brabantic dialects through its typical vowel pronunciations: approximating the vowel sound in ‘bore’ – for one of its long ‘a’-sounds while other short ‘a’s are very sharp like the vowel sound in ‘hat’. The Echt Antwaarps Teater brings the dialect on stage.
FashionAntwerp is a rising fashion city, and has produced designers such as the Antwerp Six. The city has a cult status in the fashion world, due to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, one of the most important fashion academies in Europe. It has served as the learning centre for a large number of Belgian fashion designers. Since the 1980s, several graduates of the Belgian Royal Academy of Fine
Arts have become internationally successful fashion designers in Antwerp. The city has had a huge influence on other Belgian fashion designers such as Raf Simons, Veronique Branquinho, Olivier Theyskens and Kris Van Assche.
Local productsAntwerp is famous for its local products. In August every year the Bollekesfeest takes place. The Bollekesfeest is a showcase for such local products as Bolleke, an amber beer from the De Koninck Brewery. The Mokatine sweets made by Confiserie Roodthooft, Elixir D’Anvers, a locally made liquor, locally roasted coffee from Koffie Verheyen, sugar from Candico, Poolster pickled herring and Equinox horse meat, are other examples of local specialities. One of the most known products of the city are its biscuits, the Antwerpse Handjes, literally “Antwerp Hands”. Usually made from a short pastry with almonds or milk chocolate, they symbolize the Antwerp trademark and folklore. The local products are represented by a non-profit organization, Streekproducten Provincie Antwerpen vzw.
In late 1745 the Antwerp entrepreneur Johan Alexander van
Susteren build this palace . The architect, Jan Pieter van
Baurscheit creates a luxurious residence for French, Viennese
and Northern Dutch examples. It is a sumptuous rococo building
with late baroque influences, a real gem on the Meir . Several
aristocratic families inhabit the property before it is annexed in
1812 by Napoleon to the French crown domain. Napoleon leaves
the building redesign in its imperial empire style .
After Napoleon’s defeat the Palace is in the hands of the new
United Kingdom of the Netherlands . The Dutch salon reminds
of that period. Later, the Belgian sovereigns will receive their
foreign guests . To celebrate the 75th anniversary of independence
from Belgium , the palace was completely rebuilt in 1905 under
Leopold II, it will include a hall of mirrors . The royal palace,
state ownership in the ’70’s, it serves as International Cultural
Center .
In 1998 the Palace closes his doors . In 2010, the Palace reopens
after an intensive restoration . Today, the Palace is of the people,
anyone can go there for a fascinating visit, a lunch in style or
tasty chocolates .

PORT OF ANTWERP
Romans, Vikings, the Spanish, Napoleon; they
all understood the strategic importance of
the Scheldt. Thanks to its location to the
river, Antwerp has become what it is today: a
metropolis with an international seaport. “All
an Antwerper has to do to connect with the rest of the world
is simply dip his hand into the Scheldt’s water,” former mayor
Lode Craeybeckx once said. Thanks to the Scheldt, ships, for
centuries, have brought the most diverse products from the
farthest corners of the world to Antwerp and for every cargo
a ship is available for any destination in the world.
The source of the Scheldt is in the North-French village of Gouy, and
since 2009 the Port Authority is joint owner of the source of the
Scheldt. The Scheldt flows via Hainault and Ghent to Antwerp. After
360 kilometres, the Scheldt flows into the North Sea near Flushing.
The part from Gouy to Ghent is known as the Upper Scheldt, the
part between Ghent and the Dutch border above Antwerp is known
as the Sea Scheldt and from this border the Western Scheldt flows to
the estuary in the North Sea.
The Western Scheldt and Sea Scheldt form a unique estuary. Subject
to the tides, salt seawater and sweet river water mix. Because of
the tides there is also a big area of mud flats and salt marshes, the
protected nature reserve the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe is
a beautiful case in point. Because the mud flats and salt marshes
regularly flood, they are important feeding grounds for birds. The
Scheldt is a favourite feeding ground for migratory birds flying to the
warm South to spend the winter.
Shipping on the Scheldt needs to take into account the tides. Thanks
to the latest deepening of the Scheldt in 2010 the biggest container
vessels in the world can get to Antwerp easily and safely. A constant
depth of 13.1 metres is possible and taking into account the tides,
vessels with a draught of 15.5 metres are able to get to the Port of
Antwerp. Thanks to the deepening of the Scheldt, Antwerp continues
to play a leading role as an international seaport.

ANTWERP • A CITY OF CULTURE
M MAS is a ground-breaking museum that
tells the story of the people, the past,
present and future of the city of Antwerp
and the world.
The MAS | Museum aan de Stroom - a landmark on the boundary
between the city and the port - is a ground-breaking museum
that tells the story of people with diverse mentalities who came
from a multitude of backgrounds.
The MAS is for those who are curious about the past, present
and future of the city of Antwerp and the world. It is a museum
for those who want to know more about Antwerp’s place, and
their own, in the world.
The MAS is a cultural heritage forum that works with various
collections and methodologies. It is developing a diverse
intramural and extramural programme, the common theme of
which involves stories of the river, the city, the port and the
world.
The MAS works with the public, experts and other partners
on both national and international levels. It ensures maximum
accessibility and involvement of the general public.French
seigneur, “lord”. It refers to the leading Spanish noblemen who
ruled the city during the 17th century.
Shopping
Despite its modest size, shopping in Antwerp is an
experience befitting the city’s status as an international
fashion capital. Whatever your personal style, you can
choose between the elegant offerings of major fashion
houses, cutting-edge boutiques, small independent
workshops and outstanding, pace-setting concept stores.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Antwerp Fashion
Department in 2013, this map presents you with a selection of
shops and concepts that are helping to put Antwerp fashion on
the map.
The shiny stone lusted after by princes, queens, sheiks, sultans
and kings - and mere mortals like us - has been cut, polished
and traded in Antwerp since 1447. Today 1.800 dealers line the
1 square kilometer around the Central Station in the Diamond
district. The art of polishing diamonds was invented in the city,
hence the ‘Antwerp Cut’ has become internationally synonymous
with quality and brilliance. With 80% of the world’s rough
diamonds, 50% of the cut diamonds and 45% of industrial
diamonds going through Antwerp you are in the right place to
shop up a sparkling storm. If you need a best friend - Antwerp
Diamonds shine eternal!

The Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts is one of the oldest in Europe,
founded in 1663 by David Teniers the younger, at the time regarded as
one of the greatest painters in Europe. For 300 years, the school remained
focussed on the fine arts of painting and sculpture. In the 1960s the
school expanded and new departments were opened in the applied arts,
including photography, graphic design, jewellery and fashion.
Fashion designers who are trained at an academy and who studied four
years with painters, sculptors, graphic designers, and students of other
courses, live in a creative artistic atmosphere that leaves a mark on their
personality. It requires effort and perseverance. Students are expected
to be very good draughtsmen. The study from live model in postures
and movements is essential. Students must also show a high degree of
originality in their designs. Through form studies, pattern studies,
research and graphic work, they have to be able to make their own
creations.
The fashion department of the Antwerp Academy sees fashion in the
broadest sense of the word, as a form of expression of the emotions of
our times. Clothing reflects society or, adversely, questions it. The training
provided by the fashion department stimulates innovation, encouraging
the students to create and to explore forms, new colour combinations
and original treatments of materials. The approach is focused on
experimentation, improvisation
and formal
innovation.

PETER PAUL RUBENS
Peter Paul Rubens and Antwerp.
The master and his city. The
two go hand in hand, and after
more than 400 years, the
presence of this world famous
painter can still be felt in many places
around the city.
Thousands of visitors come to this city on the Scheldt
just because of him. In the lively city centre, you
can see a number of Rubens’ most celebrated works,
with some of them still in the original location he
intended when he created them!
Rubens lived almost his entire life in Antwerp
and made an active contribution to an extended
cultural blossoming of the city. Religious
problems, along with the recapture of the
Southern Netherlands by Catholic Spain, led to
the closure of the Scheldt in 1585 and the end of
the Dutch Golden Age. Rubens transformed this
ending into a new beginning. Thanks to the role
played by this master of the Flemish Baroque
as a painter, diplomat, graphic artist, designer,
collector, teacher and source of inspiration,
Antwerp continues to bask in the light of Rubens’
genius to this day.
Nowhere else can one experience Rubens so
profoundly as in his hometown, the city where
he is also buried. In your search for this genius
you will enter some of Antwerp’s most beautiful
monuments and experience the Antwerp of
today - a melting pot of creative talent.
FLEMISH BAROQUE PAINTER
In the footsteps of Rubens
Antwerp is the consummate Baroque city, a place
where you can walk in the footsteps of Rubens and
his famed contemporaries. Discover the virtuosity
of Rubens in the historic churches and exquisite
museums and stand eye to eye with this ingenious
artist.
