ANIMAL HUSBANDRY DEPARTMENT

The Department of Animal Husbandry Dairy and Fisheries (DADF) is one of the Departments in the Ministry of Agriculture and appeared on first February, 1991.

The Fisheries Division of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation and a part of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries were later transferred to this Department.

The Animal Husbandry Department is responsible for issues related to livestock production, preservation, protection and improvement of stocks.

The Department advises the State Governments/ Union Territories in the formulation Policies and programmes in the field of animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries.

The strengthening of central livestock farms (Cattle, Sheep and Poultry) for development of superior germplasm for distribution to states.

In India, livestock has always been helpful in providing a number of draught power for the farm, manure for crops, energy for cooking and food for household consumption as well as

the market.

The rural backyard poultry development is a Government of India assisted programme under Centrally Sponsored Scheme with 100% grant for distribution of chicks to

beneficiaries and 20% subsidy for establishment of mother units.

The animal husbandry department also provides fodder seed suppliers, veterinary medicines, feed mixing plants, milking machines, dairy equipments, vaccine production

units, cattle buffalo suppliers.
