An Evening At Kaieteur In Richmond Hill, Queens By Ramesh D. Kalicharran

Last Sunday night, I wasfortunate to be in the com-pany of one of the leadingmusical maestros and key-board virtuoso theCaribbean has ever pro-duced – Shyam Ramper-sad. He told this writer, “Iam aware Devindra

Pooran and PeterDass are singers ofMukesh and Rafigenre and I know LakePersaud as a RadioBroadcaster and M.C.for over three decadesbut I was pleasantlysurprised that he blos-somed well as aKishore Kumarsinger; no wonderwhy they are referredto as the “ Dynamic

Trio”. In order to enhance the

evening, we thought it op-portune to visit the much“talked-about” program atthe Kaieteur restaurantwhere the Dynamic Triowould be performing. Bythe time they segued into

the evening’s pro-gram, one thingwas abundantlyclear- they wereon a mission andthey were not tobe denied as their“Magic” was be-ginning to unfoldright before oureyes and ears.

After DevindraPooran’s sterlingperformance, where heshared the stage with Devand Radika from the“Chotie Bahu” serial at thecasino in Richmond, hemade his way directly toKaieteur. And he was stillfull of energy as if he was

singing for the first time onthat day: calm cool and ofcourse melodious. His firstselection was “Ho To pesachaye rehte hai” film“Jis Desh Mae GangaBehti Hai”, “Socha tha

pyar” film Bluff Master, among several nostalgicsongs.

Peter Dass then took thestage with his renditions -“Adme Mursaphir hea”film Apna Pan, “Aane seooske” film “Jeene ki

Raah” , Majhi chal” -film“Aaya Sawan Jhumke”among many super hits.Shyam was thrilled to learnthat Peter performed in thepresence of Shahid Rafi(son of Mohammad Rafi)

and he wished he was thereto witness that momentousoccasion.

And then Lake Persaudwith the popular Hits ofKishore Kumar like “DilAisaa kisi ne mera toda”film Amanush.. And thenhe arouse the audience witha hit song “Chalne LageHawayein” from the film“Tere Bina”- originallysung by Abhijeet - this cer-tainly filled the dance flooras Linda Persaud took thelead.

Among the of manyfine singers is the abilitybring out the ordinary mir-acles in the world around usthrough music that res-onates with its listeners. Aslive performers, they cameto the stage with severalstrengths bringing accessi-bility to their gentle form ofmusic that were fresh andpolished while retaining acore of warmth and com-passion, not forgetting themastery of song-notes and

breath-taking pitches. What sets them apartfrom many other singerswas the captivity thatthe audience exempli-fied through their musicwith relentless claps andeven dances.

The Trio’s onstagestyle was casual andmesmerizing holding a

simple charismaleaving the audiencefeeling as thoughthey’ve been in thecomfort of a movieor concert hall as asmall, intimate holdsits own home-likecharm which encour-ages this feeling. After all, Kaieteur isa place where theTrio has been per-

forming their gig close totwo decades and on aweekly basis. As a Trio, they worked together inway that gave fullness tothe set with breathtakingambience.

The Kaieteur has beenattracting people far andwide as it was built on yearsof good reputation. Byvirtue of media includingWGBB where KaieteurAdvertisement can beheard every Sunday on In-dian Melody Time (1 –3pm) .Those who listenfind their way there. Infact, two rising cricket starsfrom Guyana Vishal & Ma-hendra Nagamootoo (twobrothers) grace their pres-ence at the Kaieteur. Theywere accompanied by V.P.of Grove Diamond CulturalOrganization RampatBishun and their entourage.

These were the ingredi-ents of an evening rich withspirit and a transcendentexperience of fresh, origi-nal filmy music. Theymaintained a careful bal-ance between the art ofsinging songs with depth, making accessible musicthat invites a larger audi-ence, and a message of so-cial and emotionalconsciousness. It was sorefreshing to meet one ofthe original owner of Kai-eteur, Richie Anderson.Needless to say hospitalityat Kaieteur becomes conta-gious as the present ownersRick Chetram and the Rup-narain brothers continuewith the same mantra.

As their performancesconcluded, I observed thesuave with which the audi-ence that was attentive, hospitable and warm asthey showed their appreci-ation of these proud sons ofGuyana. Perhaps, after all,the experience of a concertis similar to looking into thegeode or imagining thebreath of God on an ordi-nary window. However, there is certainly nothingordinary about these tal-ented, gifted veteransingers as they are truly ateam that spells music forwhat it really was simply“Soulfully spell-binding”.

It has been years now since the “Dynamic

Trio” made their collaborative debut as a

team, to share the versatility of their larynx

as they reverberated songs that were made

popular by some of the greatest singers

India’s film industry has ever produced: Mukesh

Chand Matthur, Mohammed Rafi and Kishore

Kumar Ganguly. Yes, I am referring to three sons

of Guyana who, over the years, have become

household phenomena – Devindra Pooran, Peter

Dass and Lake Persaud respectively. Inciden-

tally these three recording artistes set foot in

Bharat Desh, the land of our fore-parents through

the ever popular “Kali Bharat Yatra”.
