ALAMO AND ANNEXATION OF TEXAS
Why Texas? COTTON!
Southern States want Texas because it supports slavery
America was also afraid Texas would ally with Britain.
The Migration Mexico broke from Spain in 1821 and
settled in Texas. One year later American Steven Austin
got permission to settle in Texas as long as they followed Mex. Law and would convert to Roman catholic.
1830- Austin had 30,000 Americans in Texas
Migration cont… 1831 Mexico didn’t allow any more
immigrates come to Texas.
So Americans brought slaves to help production.
The Mexicans were getting mad that they didn’t become Catholics and they were outnumbered 10 to 1.
The Start General Antonio Lopez was elected as
Mexican president in 1833
The same time a rebellion started in Texas.
Sam Huston - the Military Leader in Texas.
Santa Anna
Santa Anna was a famous general in the Alamo. He was the leader of Mexico Army.
1835 Santa Anna brought more than 2000 men to Texas to push Texans out.
After 2 weeks Texans started to retreat.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO Mexico Army followed Huston
and the Texans to the San Jacinto Creek.
Huston turned and surprise attacked Santa Anna.
The Texas Army yelled “Remember the Alamo”
Lies… Huston captured Santa Anna
Under pressure Anna signed a treaty accepting Texas Independence
As soon as Santa Anna got free he denied ever signing the treaty.
And went against his word.
Lone Star Republic 1836 Texas declared itself as a Lone
Star Republic. Texas asked to join the United States in
1836. The North thought it was a plan to
increase slavery support. The Senate didn’t get a 2/3 vote. The Treaty was denied.
Lone Star Republic cont… Again in 1843 Texas retried. President Tyler feared that Texas would
ally with the British. So they could have the cotton. Tyler also feared if they accepted the treaty it would cause war with Mexico.
The Senate rejected the treaty again 35-16.
Solution James Polk of Tennessee went to
Congress with a joint resolution to accept Texas as a state.
Joint Resolution- requires the majority of both houses of congress.
Treaty- requires 2/3 vote of only Senate
December 1845 the Lone Star Republic (Texas) became the 28th state.
Conflict The border between Texas and Mexico
was undetermined
They both tried to claim more land
Mexico threatened war!
