Keeping UsConnectedSchools are social institutions-- we love learning with and from our students-- theenergy and activity is contagious! Feedback is a critical piece of learning. Indeed,John Hattie, a noted educator from New Zealand, states that feedback has asignificant effect on student learning and has been described as “the mostpowerful single moderator that enhances achievement”.

But how?In our Distance Learning Program, what non-traditional ways do students giveand receive feedback? One way is through the use of Flipgrid, an online tool thatenables students to record and share short videos that offer feedback andsuggestions to their peers. Unlike a traditional classroom discussion, Flipgrid canbe reviewed repeatedly and students can gain a clearer understanding of thefeedback given.

G10HumanitiesIn our Grade 10 Humanities class, each student represented a country at animaginary Model United Nations conference. After researching their chosencountry's position on climate change and the Paris Agreement, they thenresponded to a resolution on climate change. Students wrote and then sharedtheir opening speech through Flipgrid--- and just as importantly, gave andreceived feedback from their peers and teacher.

Alwayslearning...How do teachers find out about the various apps and tools available? Our teachersare active learners! Many of us take advantage of a variety of webinars that offeroverviews and training for apps such as Flipgrid, Perusall, as well as the widevariety of tools available through Google Classroom. Additionally, we learn fromeach other through team meetings, weekly staff meetings, as well as from thesupport we receive through our tech team.

Canadian Academy continues to keep students and teachers connected whilemaintaining high expectations.
